Flamestrike's dots

I always figured that the "dot" part of Flamestrike happened only if the target was inside the flamestrike "circle" on the ground. I always managed to keep my target inside it.

But re-reading the spell's tooltip, I realise that the text can be confusing:
"burning all ennemies within the area for X to Y Fire damage and an additional XX to YY Fire Damage over 8 sec."

I understand that in order to be affected by the initial "burst" damage, the target must be inside the flamestrike circle. But does the target still receive the effect of the dot even if it leaves it, or does it have to stay in it to receive the whole dot?

As far as I know, once you have the DoT it stays on the character. Think of it as something on the character catching fire and buring for 8 seconds.

I can't promise this...but I'm 90% sure on this one.
