look what I found, it's a 'map' of all of the genres, subgenres, and fusion genres that make up metal, with examples of each, with each genre put in a chonologically correct location (upper left is the 60's, bottom right is now(ish))

I remember that thing. I had a lot of fun with it, and most of the sample music is pretty awesome.

Saturday Morning Cartoon X-Men theme from the 90's.

Wow. I just came buckets. I loved the X Men cartoons! :3 Gambit was so epic. And Jubilee. WHERE WAS JUBILEE FOR THE MOVIES, AND WHY WAS GAMBIT KINDA CRAPPY? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Because the movies were kind of crappy? Heh.

You can say that about Origins and X3, but the first was great, and X-Men II may be my favorite superhero movie ever. I am sad about how Gambit got shafted, though, he's definitely my favorite X-Men character.

Since I don't want to derail anything, I'll just throw these songs here. I've been addicted to Jethro Tull in general lately, but those two songs in particular (and by extension, those two albums) are two I've listened to constantly lately.

So, I like Sonata Arctica muchly, Opeth so far has been kinda meh (a little too dark for me) and Judas Priest was also kinda meh.

Granted, I only listened to about 5 songs each of Opeth and Judas Priest =P

Granted, I only listened to about 5 songs each of Opeth and ...

Try songs off Watershed or Blackwater Park, those are far easier to get into; listening to any album before BWP at face value can give you a bad impression since they're much harder to get into, especially if you're not used to the dark stuff. Not that they're bad (they're definitely not) but they're not really good for people who've never listened to Opeth before. Damnation is even easier to get into than those 2, but it's not really metal at all (which is not to say it's not good - it is)

Speaking of X-movies, I remember people being more sad about what they had done to Deadpool. And after reading a character bio on the interwebz, I don't blame them.

Heh np, I noticed you mentionned "I like a lot of metal, but almost all of it is symphonic/power/speed", so I tried going towards that when starting the list. After a while I just started adding great bands I listen to though. And I'm not even mentionning progrock bands since you only asked metal :D

Screw it, added Sabaton as well. You never know :)

So I found out my dad's brother, and my dad, to a lesser extent, were into a lot of prog rock when they were kids. King Crimson, Rush, Zappa, Yes, Jethro Tull.

My Uncle's yearbook quote was "21st Century Schizoid Man."

They sound awesome. I wish my dad was that cool. When I told him I loved Jethro Tull he seemed to think I was weird...he wasn't much of a nerd as a kid. Ironically, he's probably a lot nerdier now.

My old basketball coach was a massive deadhead. Hell, he's why I got into the Dead. The only cool band my dad's a pretty big fan of is Led Zeppelin, which is pretty awesome. Led Zeppelin's the earliest band I remember listening to, even.
