As Kay failed to try to find a conversation topic with the girl, his mind went back to one conversation with an acquaintance

"Geez, you really are a failure in terms of relating to women. Guess that your dad didn't pass down to you."

Last resort: "Well, is there any pokémon in the region that you specifically want to catch?"

"One more match to go!" the announcer cried out. "This is four losses in a row for the Striaton Gym Leaders! These rookies have proven their merit! But will they manage to clean the whole house? Or will this last fight claim a victory for our trio of connoisseurs?!"

"Calling one Alex to the platform for our last fight!"

Alice blinked, casting a look across their group. They didn't have anyone here named Alex? Or... did they? She hadn't gotten everybody's name, after all.

Cress and Cilan backed off from the stage, finally allowing Chili to race for the brothers' side of the battlefield, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" he cried.

"A Meloetta ofcourse." She said as if it was very much obvious. "Other than that maybe a Volcarona and Gyarados?" Robin added with a shrug.

“Woo!” Cynis shouted, jumping out his seat (and surreptitiously replacing the trainer card back into his pocket). The jacket wearing youth skipped up the steps, followed by Stuka and more slowly the Purrloin, with all three ignoring a girl at one of the other tables who had been halfway out of her own chair before sitting back down.

Striding to his square, Cynis turned bashfully to face the fiery gym leader, batting his eyes coquettishly. In a falsetto, he begged, "Please sir, be gentle. It's my first time."

Chili, who had taken his own position, promptly lost much of his enthusiasm. "Oh, great," he grunted, crossing his arms before his chest. "One of you people."

Casting off the teasing persona, Cynis drew himself to his full - though still somewhat short - height. "Oh? And jsut what do you mean you people."

Chili sniffed derisively. "One of those people who come to a gym just wanting attention."

"Oh! As opposed to people who style their hair like a flame?"

Slapping a hand to his hair, Chili glared. "Hey! My hair is all natural!"

"Yeah! Naturally dyed!"

"What would you know? You look like you haven't washed yours in months. Or is 'rat's nest' in fashion these days?"

"Better than someone who spends two hours every morning in front of the mirror gelling. Isn't all that oil up there a fire hazard?"

"Oh, that's it," Chili growled threateningly, widening his stance and glowering. "I was gonna go easy on you but now? This is on."

"Then let's do this! Go! Stuka!"

"Go! Lillipup!"

Alice gripped the Pokeball in her hands tightly, mouth pursing into a fine line as Cynis made his way up on stage. Something felt so off about him being there, and it didn't help how he was already goading the temperamental fire leader.

Something bad was going to happen. She couldn't get that feeling to go away.

"Realy?" Robin asked with a friendly smile upon her face.

"Yes, a couple calls could get me gifted a nice Magikarp egg with good potentials, you'd have to train it, but the problem is none wants to go through the effort evolving a Magikarp just to trade it. However, if what you want is to catch an already evolved Gyarados, I can also be of help. Gyarados has been a non-Dragon favorite of us Dragon Tamers for a good time. We have more detailed descriptions than what appears in the Pokédex, and-" As he was smiling, Kay then noticed Cynis's attitude as he went up the stage, and said: "This might not end well" with slightly worried look. The trainer felt his Pokéballs. Charmander was almost in full strength thanks to the potion he had used.

"I thought that I could just use a fishing rod in some waters and get a magikarp and splash it's way into a Gyrados. But eggs are cool too." She replied to Kay, glancing over at Cynis, or perhaps Alex as he was now called. "I though his name is Cynis."

"Yes it is. Can we discuss the egg later? It might not be a good moment to talk about it." The trainer then said, in a lower voice: "Get ready in case you see any of his Pokémon get a little too aggressive."

"Stuka!" Cynis shouted, "use hydropump!"

Chili started. "Wha, hydro-hey!" he snapped as the murkrow flashed by the lillipup, a wing attack scoring the canine pokemon across the chest.

"Haha!"

Chili gripped his hands into fists at his sides. "Oh so that's how it is huh! Lillipup! Bite!" With a growl the dog pokemon leaped towards the airborne one.

"Astonish!"

Swirling about, Stuka cawed, his cry reverberating towards the canine pokemon. Unfortunately, the move failed to faze the smaller pokemon, and with a cry the lillipup latched onto Stuka's wing with needle sharp teeth. Both pokemon plummeted to the floor, striking the stage with a bang.

Alice slipped Chi's pokeball back into a pocket on the inside of her vest and leaned forward. The pity party was still going on in the back of her head, but it had been pushed aside momentarily in favor of scrutinizing Cynis.

Kay took the chance to relax a little bit. Other than the fake attack order, everything was going normally. The trainer still kept his grip on the Pokéball, though.

"Fight pokemon?" Anton asked, perking up. "Fighting pokemon are my favorites. I hope we find those."

"Ha!" Chilly cackled. "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen."

The reply was preceded by a groan from Cynis. "That is such a cliche. And it doesn't even work! Aren't you supposed to be a waiter?"

"I have other hobbies!"

On the stage, Stuka was revealed to have squirmed in midair so that his own fall had been broken by the Lillipup. Regardless of this, the canine pokemon had far from let go of his feathered prey. Instead, he kept his teeth firmly gripped on the Murkrow's wing. Stuka lurched his hatted head back and began stabbing at the Lillipup's head with his beak in an attempt to force the issue.

A wide gash opened in the pokemon's brown and tanned fur, just above the Lillipup's eye from one of these attacks. With a cry the dog pokemon released Stuka's wing and jumped back, growling low. Stuka, meanwhile, loomed at the other side of the stage. He hunched down and spread his wings slightly like a grim specter, a low warbling noise coming from deep in his throat as he slowly began to stalk about the other pokemon.

"Damn," Chili growled on noting the way Lillipup favoured his right, the side which had taken most of the impact during the fall. He produced a pokeball. "Lillipup! Return!"

At that Stuka jerked as if about to rush in against the pokemon before it could flee, but a hiss from Cynis forestalled it. Glancing back, the Murkrow observed its trainer beckoning it back. "Stuka! Return!" With a final glance at the red haired trainer opposite, the Murkrow hopped back and fluttered laboriously onto Cynis's shoulder.

Drawing himself up, Chili put on a mock expression of seriousness. "Thank you for your patience. Your order of an asskicking has now arrived! Go, Pansear!" Chili flung the pokeball at the stage, disgorging a small simian type of pokemon.

Yellow, red, and with a swirl of hair like an ember, the fire type threw its chest out and flexed its arms as if challenging the other to strike the first blow. "Pansear!"

Cynis grinned, though it happened to look a bit more like a snarl. "Go PurrlointhatIhavenotyetbotheredtoname!"

The Purrloin turned its head to Cynis. Though suspicion remained, a certain degree of respect was present in the pokemon's slitted eyes as well, formed during the battle against the lillipup. Rising, the feline padded into the ring, ears twitching with disdain for the showy pokemon she was to face. With a snikt, she unsheathed her claws and crouched low.
