i dont think the pally hammer is considered a spell, that might be the issue.
Hammer of Justice absolutely gets absorbed by grounding totem. What's probably happening, because it's BG's, is that grounding totem is simply absorbing another spell before the hammer (a lot of spells fly around). Also remember that grounding totem only works for
your party
, that's only 5 people, not the whole raid.

Didn't it used to be that grounding totem only absorbed spells cast at the shaman, not the party?
I could have sworn it did, but I may have missed it in the patch notes if it was changed.

Its worked this way for as long as I can remember. Comments from patch 2.0.10 about
Maiden of Virtue
from Kara discuss grounding totem eating Holy Fire's.
