I've been slowly building a pve moonkin set, but waiting forever getting groups for heroics/dailies is getting old.
I used to dual spec heal 5 mans all the way to 80 in my lvling moonkin set, but heard crap about it alot and failed trying a few heroics just into 80.

given my current gear, think i'd be able to heal with a dash of skill and bear the shame of healing in the wrong costume?

yes and no. theres a lot of gear out there that can suit a boomkin and a resto just fine, your helm and chestpiece as prime examples.
however, given your current level of gear, i would recommend not trying it.
first thing you need to do is get rid of as many blues you have i lvl 187 and below. easiest way to do so would be to farm Trial of the Champion on reg. get as much as you can from there, and the best way to not be criticized or kicked from a group about your gear is to start one yourself and tell them that youre a fresh 80 trying to gear up.
then build separate sets for both specs, and gem them accordingly. for example.. get another Handwraps of surrendered Hope, and gem it with spirit and spellpower, keeping the hit rating on the one for your boomset.

If you run with an overgeared tank, especially a pally one, you're totally fine. If your gonna try doing it with people around your gear level, it will probably be too hard.

thanks for the replies everyone.
I did try running Gundrak last night with a pally tank. It was a little difficult and he had to flash of light himself a few times, but no wipes. Had to use a soulstone during the last boss to come back and heal him from ~2k hp. too close for comfort. think im gonna go gear up now.

Your gear is okay
if you have Replenishment
. If you're not running with a ret pally, frost mage, shadow priest, survival hunter, or destro lock (or if for some asinine reason they don't have the talents -- destro locks are notorious for this), you'll likely have mana problems.
The reason is that all your gear has a big chunk of intellect on it, and the more intellect you have, the more mana you get back from every tick of Replenishment.
I'd start by farming Tears of the Vanquished out of regular ToC.

you're going to have some trouble keeping up but yes, with a sufficient tank to make up for your current weaknesses you can definitely start running heroics for better gear, as your gear improves the quality of your tank can decrease without jeopardizing the run
i myself severely neglect the offspec boomkin gear but have respecced and healed KT in boomkin gear just fine (i did swap a trinket but other than that it was all balance gear)
hope you have a good tank friend interested in grinding emblems and running with another druid or priest for mana regen wouldn't hurt

tbh i do it all the time.... not on purpose though.
i see
"Need 1 healer for h daily"
so I ask for an Inv.... So i get the inv and switch spec while getting a summon, what not.
However. I forgot to switch gear, so at the end (idk why i always find out at the end) i realize im still in boomkin gear and laugh to myself knowing it really doesnt matter as long as you have sufficient spell power.
