Arcane is good DPS once you have the gear to go with it, but also very mana inefficient for raiding/grouping unless you are with a shadow priest and chug mana pots at all times. Frost is your best bet if you want to stay with survivability; it is built to be that way, you can't have the best of both worlds ;)

well thanks for posting your thoughts so when i get to the outlands ill do arcane can you give me some thoughts on gear and maybe a build for arcane thank you
In order for arcane to be good, your gear needs to be tier 5 or better. A common build is
seen here
. Two points left over for wherever you wish (Slow works on some mobs, not all).

I've taken a break from raiding with my mage so I respec'd to arcane for heroics. One of the great things about arcane is the reduction in threat - 40% vs 10% for fire. When I was 10/48/3, I had to wait for a tank to establish aggro on a mob - trash or otherwise. Now I can start to DPS after the tank's first strike without worrying about aggro'ing.
True, the lightning capacitator was nerfed. It was making up 8% of my total damage, now it's 6-7%. Still an incredible trinket with that kind of increase. I don't use a MSD since I have a SS helm. Not sure about the new #s on that.
Soloing's not too bad. I can usually dps a mob (5-6k health) down with a single AM volley but you need over 1000 dmg and a good crit rate (30+%). I kept a few points in fire for ignite/imp fireball and flamethrowing for occassions where I need a 41' spell.

An arcane spec is mostly reliant on intellect. Not spelldamage.
.....
EVERY caster spec is primarily reliant on spell damage. Int is just a little more important to arcane mages than to other mages. For instance, they get 25% of their int -> spell damage. Nice bonus but still have to get a lot of +damage for the spec to work.

My 2 cents...
Don't spec into pure arcane, especially not once you get into heroics (and beyond). You'll be OOM and chugging/evocating before the fight's even half over (assuming your group doesn't outgear it already)....
see above
..
Well for heroics, guess it depends on what you think is outgearing them. I have 1067 dmg and a 28% crit rate with over 10k mana. Spellfire, t4 shoulders and some kara gear. I've never gone OOM in a heroic boss fight, no potions or evocations.
In Karazhan, I have a well geared spriest friend, evocation and gems, no mana potions.
Spell pushback is important, not for when you're getting hit my mobs, but from secondary damage effects like AOE effects (there are a ton in 5mans/10mans).
In heroics, the fights are so short I just spam arcane missles, skipping AB in the rotation.
Arcane is
very
gear-dependent and has a number of drawbacks no doubt, but with the right gear, you can make it work. I never had problems maximizing DPS with fire. But I was constantly hitting the threat ceiling. I would have to pause sometimes for the tank to catch up, sigh. I run heroics with a 10/48/3 friend with similiar gear and we are roughly the same in terms of DPS.
Scorch is good DPM but less DPS than the standard fireballx8,scorch rotation.
Frost is definitely the way to go in Arena, Arcane is simply not a PVP build.

my lvl 52 mage 3-shots yellow mobs, and 2-shot them if i crit
i use 100% fire spec with about 240 spell damage
it's lots of fun. I recommend giving first a try... you can still freeze, blast wave, and dragons breath for stuns.

at 70 with ~1035 spell dmg Toenail (seen below) never runs out of mana in 5man or 10man runs, to include boss fights.
Rotation? AM xN (where N is the number of AM to kill it)
Every time you see Leaving Combat on your screen, drink. If your group gets a little ahead of you dont freak out cuz the tank needs agro anyway. This takes care of 5man and 10man trash.
For boss fights:
Equip Alchemist's Stone (arcane mage = herb/alch)
Drink Elixir of Draenic Wisdom + Adept's Elixir
When mana deficit reaches 3k, use Mana gem.
When mana deficit reaches 5k, drink mana potion.
When mana deficit reaches ~75%, Evocate.
Rinse, Lather, Repeat.
As for farming (on a lower scale) it takes me one AM to kill a lvl 60 mob in Hellfire Peninsula.

Check out my spec on the armory link below. It's full arcane with pyro, and it rocks!
In raids, I do Arcane Blast > AB > AB, Arcane missiles > Arcane Missiles, then a scorch or two and repeat. Then use PoMPyro when arcane concentration procs.
