Mabey show them you are better than the average huntard. Like me, i dont use vanalos longbow, to common, use the pvp cross bow, better, and dule other hunters and make ppl watch, that should prove you are not the average hunter. mabey not the best advice but hey, its true.

Mages, Rogues, and Warlocks out DPS us, and Mages have better CC options.
Well, if you're aiming for acceptance in PUGs, the first step is obviously to stop fooling yourself with such nonsense ;) Your CC is waaaay more versatile than that of mages, and a lot better, if utilized the right way (remember, it's not ALL about the traps). Your same-geared dps should be more than close enough, if not higher, depending on spec.
If you choose to go the pvp route however, don't get the painsaw - find another hunter also in need of a two-hander, do some arena until you have 1000 points and get the Waraxe ;) Then buy the Gladiator crossbow for your honor points instead.

Start by ignoring stuff like the above.
The only reason is dislike hunters in my group is because I am one, and dislike competition for gear (Unless it's rep runs).
Aside from that, Hunters have a versatility that rogues, warlocks and mages don't.
We have traps, used for DPS or CC.
We have a pet, that can be used as an off-tank, or CC by throwing it at a mob and casting mend pet.
We have many different shots (Mana burn, DPS, CC) and with the recent buff to arcane shot, we can debuff foes.
Wearing mail armor, we can take more beats then those clothies.
Feign death allows for the MOST effective threat control in the game (In my opinion).
Really... stop doubting your class so much.
