Check to see if you get a BSOD while playing another 3D game. My friend's last video card was dying and could render 2D fine, but would crash in any 3D app. If you can isolate it to the video then you could try updating/reinstalling your video drivers. Also, hardrives typically have nothing to do game crashes (unless the HD is dying then everything would crash) so reformatting wouldn't do anything :S
