I'd go with warlock myself, as long as you're sure they need more damage-dealing spellcasters.

Locks have about the same single-target damage as mages, but have more utility in curses and stones, are more robust, and get a wide range of pets for different situations. Personally, I think they're more fun to play all around, but then I hate the whole stay-out-of-range-at-all-costs glass cannon thing that mages have going on... at least with a warlock you have voidie to tank (aka take the hits) for you ;) The areas where mages are better are crowd control (polymorph beats succubus seduce), travel options (you gotta love teleport) and area damage, where mages are definitely the kings of WoW.

Here's a decent levelling spec - go Affliction first, focus on the damage talents, then switch to Destruction...

Use voidie up to about lvl 30, then learn to drain-tank ;)

tank
heal
moonkin/feral DPS

warlock or mage, ask your guild, Robyn makes a good comment: warlock pets VS mageCC and AoE

as for leveling, warlocks, go demonology if you solo a lot, if your pet is stronger, it's easier for you
for mages, it doesn't matter, ice = freeze them before they touch you, fire = burn them before they even think of touching you
