The way the dynamics in Heroics work at the moment is that a lot of groups can't afford to take "sort of geared" characters through. These can be long and tedious runs where trying to makeup for low performance can be impossible. For instance it is honestly a risk to take DPS that is only doing 5K dps where some bosses have soft enrage modes and spending an extra X seconds in heavy damage isn't always a trivial thing for a tank or a healer. I don't blame groups for looking at tanks and healers in the same way.
What I recommend is taking a look at the faction vendors. There are a lot of gear you can "buy off the shelf" to get sarted for Heroics with Justice Points and faction vendors even at Honored but you can't be stingy. Get their tabard and do the dailies and queue for the Normal for Justice Points. And your guild can help even with an incomplete group. A group isn't going to vote to kick you if you brought 2 of your guild with you (but they may up and leave).

The thing is, anyone in quest greens and end-zone quest / honor reputation quest blues (333s) can put out well above the requirements of a heroic with intelligent play. Hell,
my feral druid
is pretty poorly geared, and I consistently can put out 11-12k DPS on relatively stand-still bosses. In bear gear.
This game, is still not hard.

There aren't any glaring faults there. You've probably just had a string of bad luck.
One thing that everyone on this forum seems to forget is that no matter what any one person's specific experience has been with anything in this game, it has ALWAYS been a vanishingly small (and biased) sample size.

This game, is still not hard.
It is more an issue of "investment" than "difficulty". It is common for players to only enough time to commit to only one dungeon a night where if they jump into a random heroic that is the only group they see for that day and really don't want to mess around or do anything risky.
Beyond that, if a player can spend hours every day working on their character, getting geared up for heroic attempts isn't harsh. If a player can only spend a couple of hours every few days then they will have a harder time. For players in the later category they are probably better off doing dailies than trying make groups happy in random heroics.

Here's my take on your setup.
do not ever gem/enchant for spirit as it's the least desirable stat we want as holy.
I know wait, your yelling at me right now... but mana regen fool! wait... Int is still better.
Int contributes to Spellpower (bigger heals for the same casts time), crit and a larger mana pool.
Spirit well gets you well mana regen - nothing else.
When Replenishment is rolling its regening 1% of you
maximum
mana pool, o O Int is alot more attractive now, also, Int contributes directly to your in combat regen.
Divine Plea regen from maximum mana
Even the Blood elves Arcane torrent gives back mana from maximum mana
Elitistjerks suggest:
Elitistjerks
INT > Haste > crit = mastery > spirit
And usually these guys have done the math.
So replace your spirit enchants with some Int enchants, get the shoulder enchant from Terrazane.
Replace your pure spirit gems with either
Int + haste
Int + spirit
or pure Int
While you replacing those:
Get the rep belt from Ramkahen
the back from Dragonmaw
the chest from Earthen Ring
And replace that spirit trinket asap with anything with Int on it.
Get more Int above and beyond anything. 72k mana is not much when you need to survive a bad pull.
I've been following that and very successfully been running heroics and enjoying myself.
the only time I ever go oom, is with a bad pull, a very bad dps or low dps on a boss fight, and oom is a big word as all fights I have found a lull moment to regen mana somehow.
anyways, that's my experience so far.

Honestly, as long as tanks know their limits and can assign CC in a group that has the capabilities to, and the DPS can move out of the fire (an enormously hard and arduous task for some, sadly), it's well within your capabilities to heal most heroics at this point. That said though, if people are leaving before you pull it might not be related to you: DPS skip the queue by paying a tank for his queue and then the tank can do whatever he wants. This is unfortunate, and annoying, but it happens, so the problem might not be related to you.
Generally speaking though, if you see something bad, call it out. If the tank is alive and a DPS isn't, the DPS did something wrong, not you. The only place where the exception to that rule should be made is on Husam in Heroic Lost City; DPS can get combo'd by a Bad intentions right onto a land mine if they're not particularly geared (the combo deals 100-110k+ damage in less than a second so it's nearly impossible to heal through unless you're prepping a heal before hand which can be tough if the tank's tanking a bunch of hits). Other than that, there is not a single source of damage in heroics right now that will immediately kill someone if they are in it for more than a second at a time. Alpha Beams on the third boss on Heroic HoO will deal an obscene amount of damage if the DPS doesn't move right away, but that said when you're sitting on 100k health, you tend to notice a quarter of it ticking away every second.
Don't get discouraged; just remind, or tell, whoever got hit by the AoE and died that your mana is not unlimited, and that the tank has a higher priority on healing than they do.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!
You're right, spirit shouldn't be gemmed. (I didn't read the rest of your post, because what I did failed immensely.) It absolutely should be enchanted on slots where it's available and Intellect isn't.
IT CERTAINLY IS NOT OUR LEAST DESIREABLE STAT.
IT'S THE SECOND MOST DESIREABLE STAT NEXT TO INTELLECT.
Don't let misinformed morons like the quote'd above confuse you. Spirit is a fantastic secondary stat for us.
