Can't blame OP for misconception on gear. On my 1st toon, a lock, I could never get groups so I grinded for PvP gear and whatever I could craft, find or buy. PvP gear got me thru 1st half of kara, at which point I upgraded to my nice purple pve epics :)
Right now it is so easy to get good gear from dungens ...I haven't even tried the new PvP system yet :P Best bet, do all the 80 dungens wearing a tabard to get rep (
check factions for the best gear for you
), most have nice rewards at honored, rev'd, and exalted.

Once you have all 80 dungen gear and rep gear, I'd say try for heroics. With badge loots, heroic drops, and boss epic drop at end you will be well geared for Naxx. I even was brought in to naxx one night still wearing 2 greens and did fine (I would not recommend it though :P)

It was absolutely valid to grind honor and buy the PvP weapons and some other honor loot for PvE before Kara...
My rogue's S2 swords lasted till BT
My mages PvP neck never got replaced, it was simply that good.
now pvp gear realy sucks, and you get much better for hc-s...
just run a lot get crafted and badge gears and the drops and you are ready to go...
and don't underestimate high level blues, some of them are better than than first epics..
actually you can start naxx10 with good! blues only...
