If he's still leveling gear doesn't matter that much. If you still want some I suggest running instances for some blue items. Although it will be a waste of time since your son will be replacing all his green, blue and purple items with outlands greens.
As for stats, hunters should focus on:
Stamina
Agility
Attack Power
Not necessarilly in that order.
As for talents, I suggest Beast Mastery. It offers good survivability and decent damage output.
Armor isn't a big deal for hunters since the pet is supposed to take all the damage, but if you want more armor I suggest you grab the
Thick Hide
talent. Also, if he's still wearing leather items I suggest he upgrade them to mail items.
