How important is class viablity?

This will ultimately be a simple question, and just a heads up, I'm not trying to start a fight by asking this, I'm legitimately curious before I spend any time in classic. I started playing WoW right before the BC pre-patch years ago, and frankly, hated everything about my limited time in Vanilla and my time playing BC. Lich King fixed every single one of the problems I had with Vanilla and BC and kept me around, but that's an entirely different topic. The problems I had with pre Lich King content were the classes and specs felt... forced. For example, I wanted to play as a fury warrior, but could never get into dungeon groups unless I tanked, which I still hate to this day. Or I couldn't play as a paladin and do anything other than heal until Lich King came out. Fast forward to today, with Classic WoW and a community that has a much greater understanding of the game they're playing. My question is whether or not Classic is just as punishing and toxic as I remember it and BC being. If I invest the time to level a DPS warrior or a paladin, will I have a role in end game, or is it just a waste of time? If I want to play as a Shaman, will I be able to do anything other than heal in groups? Simply put, is Classic still just as rigid in class roles and expectations as it was when this was current content?

Find a class and style of play that YOU like. And play that. The "end game" isn't any fun if you don't like what you're playing. Why bother?
Classes are not as balanced in Classic. By design. There were strengths and weaknesses. Groups needed some of everything. As the game went on people began to complain that their particular class was underpowered, others overpowered, etc. Trying to appease these people brought us to the state of "retail." Everybody basically does everything.
I've tried different specs (rogue), I simply like Combat the best. It fits me, my abilities, my temperament. I play that and let the chips fall where they may. If people want to insult me, or try to force me to a different spec, I ignore them - its MY character, not theirs and I don't work for them nor do I try to tell them how to play their class.

I'd advise going for something that fits the meta if you're a beginner (or are returning after a long time), so that you can get acquainted with the mechanics of the game, its balance, while having a "cost-efficient" character.
And then, when you're familiar with the game and how it works, you can experiment to your heart's content and just use what you find cool!

I can tell you now, no, things aren't balanced in classic. Not every spec is perfectly viable. That's intended because that's how it was back then. In bc, however, the specs ARE viable. The specs have NEVER been balanced, and still aren't balanced in retail today and surely wasn't in wrath, but you could play whatever spec you wanted and be successful starting in bc. Prot and ret
paladin, shadow priest, all of it. Some could argue that you could in vanilla too but imo that's kind of going beyond what was intended.
Also fury warriors are not only viable in vanilla, but are good. If you're getting asked to tank that's just because finding tanks are hard.

Yeah, there's also that. The game is geared towards parties, not towards individual players, which means that there's no "silver bullet", no super-character that's a jack of all trades. You can get more balanced ones, more powerful ones, but in the end, you'll still need a well-balanced party to handle dungeons.
