How to make Pokemon battles better? Help from WOW/Diablo
Return to board index
I am making a pokemon like game in that you battle one on one with another monster. I currently have it set up with just four moves per monster and each gets one move per turn. What are some ways that you think the Pokemon battle system could be improved?
One idea I had was to use the speed attribute to make a pseudo real time turn system where each attack adds X amount of time units to your timer so you could potentially make 2 quick (and weaker) attacks before the other monster attacks. I also thought using status effects to augment moves would be more invovled such as how immolate is required for a conflag or giving bonus damage to frozen/burned monsters.
What are your thoughts?
I like both the speed aspect (faster attacks may hit twice but for less damage) and the DAII-esque combo system. In DA, you can for example freeze enemies to deal much more damage (I haven't played in a while, but I think this is how it works) when you shatter them. Combos like that, I think, create more interesting combat and is definitely worth exploring.
I am also trying to decide if I want to stick with the 4 move system. I don't like how in the pokemon games you basically find the move that will do the most damage based on resistances/vulnerabilities. Using the status modifying moves felt like a waste of time. I want to make it so you don't always have the same move/skill that you are using for 80%+ of the time because it has the best damage/resource ratio.
One example I have is that the use of fire moves would cause the target to be burned for a certain number of turns or so long with the timer. During that time, other fire moves might see a +5% damage increase and certain moves might only be available when the target is burned.
Also, I thought that by freezing your enemy, you can slow them down so that the time between attacks is increased allowing you to attack faster.
