How vital is my armor for leveling ret?

Hey, I'm pretty new to playing a ret pally, and I'm loving it.
I just have one thing on my mind alot when I'm questing with my friend. HE HAS MORE ARMOR THEN ME!
I rolled a pally because I wanted a dps class that was not as squishy as a mage or lock, but now my friend has almost 1k more armor on his hunter of equal level (like 48-49). I went with gear with lots and lots of strength, attack power, and a little stam, I never really cared if it was leather, mail or plate. Because of this I find myself always out DPSing my friend's hunter, but always getting hit alot harder when questing.
How vital is armor to a ret pally during leveling?
thanks in advance.

Not that important. It's really personal preference. As long as you're happy it doesn't matter. Theoretically you should have higher armor than him, but while leveling damage and survival are usually more important.

The OP said he also uses leather and whatnot.
to the OP, wear whatever is the best for your DPS, healing shouldn't be of concern to you as ret.

Since paladin is a class that stands there and eats the hits, more armor is always helping... But then, if they're dead they can't hit you, so you shouldn't sacrifice damage for survivability.

sacrifice survivability for damage
that what you mean you make more sense
just do it easy....more armor less PHYS damage per hit.....but at pre-tbc it not matter (except on elite maybe) because the mobs there not hit for much so it only become most diffrent 10-20 damage
