Mining is a good profession for a steady income if you have kept it up with your level. Just don't level up engi and sell the ore/bars on the AH and you'll make lots of money.

Did you leave both professions? Mining (any gathering skill for that matter) is not worthless. Engineering gives you the best headgear outside of raids, but besides that its worth is arguable.

It all depends on what you want to do. 2 gathering skills will get you plenty of gold, and costs nothing except a few hours of your time to level. Each crafting profession provides a unique bonus for you. There's really no such thing as a "worthless" profession, some are just more useful than others.
