Make a char of your own, dont play his.
There is something personal about your characters. Keep his account alive, but make something for yourself where you can screw up as you go and not affect him.

You don't have to use his account to keep it alive. As long as he keeps giving them $15 a month for the next six years, they will still be there. Of course by then the level cap will be 250 , Azeroth will be a steaming husk destroyed by the old gods, and the remnants of Azeroth will be chased across the galaxy by the Burning Legion to a small blue planet called Earth.
But seriously, six years is a long time. Make and play your own character if you want. You can have a level 80 easily in two months of casual play time and a reasonably well geared one in four.
My point I guess is: Don't limit your enjoyment of the game to two classes because six years from now your brother wants to be in Tier 400 gear.
EDIT: To clear up my comment, you don't have to pay Blizzard to keep your characters alive. They are there whether you are paying them or not - at least according to their current policy. I guess it's possible for that to change in the next six years, but I doubt it. If they deleted characters, then nobody would ever re-subscribe.

I would say start your own.
There are lots of things to learn on the way from 1 to 80. It's already been made a lot quicker and easier than it used to be. And it's not just major things to learn like your class, there is also the nuances of dungeon groups, spells, the lore, general quest formats.
One thing, for example, is the use and such of spells. Everytime I even have a break of say 3 months, I will need to come back to my rogue and go just relearn the rotations and timings of my abilities. I couldn't even begin to do it with a level 80 character I've never played before! I'd be absolutely lost playing my mates level 80 mage, wouldn't no my arse from my elbow!
Then there is grouping. Wow. Such a major part of the game, nothing can prepare you for it than those first few runs in Deadmines or Ragefire Chasm. I couldn't imagine learning all about pulling and CC'ing in like Nexus or Zul'Drak.
Funz.
Best bet though mate, create a Shaman. All I've ever heard is FACEROLL.
