It was never a problem of gear, it's a problem (or not) of mentality. People want to do some things without having to explain them to the others to get whatever they want faster (Karazhan badges, CoT4 mount, ...) and minimizing chances of failures.
They could discuss a lot with you, test your knowledge of class and mecanics and so on or they can just ask for an achievement/look at your gear. It's not fair, but it will always happen.
Me i don't care, i mostly run with my guild anyway.

I've got a problem with that. I'm a tank, and because of that I'm expected to lead the instance run. Not being able to run content I've never cleared doesn't really work well.
Example, it's my first time in Kara with a PUG, and I'm making things. Another member of the raid say, mark them different because XYZ. This makes sense, he's going on past experience of running the place and showed me where I was going wrong. Great, I re-marked and the pull went fine. Easy to do, nothing happen that took more than a few mins of typing and I learned what to do. Later on he points out that we should pull this next group round into side room due to fear or a patrol, we do so and it goes fine. He points out other things as we go so I know what's going on, a great help for someone who's new to the content.
Now we get to the a boss; no matter how much I read, or how many vids I watch, I'm not going to really know where things are, and how the fight goes until I give it ago. This mean that you should expect a wipe first try, or at best a messy kill. We wipe and try again, this time getting the kill, a bit messy but a kill all the same. Next time I run the place I'll know what I'm doing better and will have a cleaner run of it.
So I've gone from someone who's never seen the content so someone who know what to expect and how to deal with it in the space of one run thanks to a group of players who were happy to help me learn the content so next time they call for a tank there's another on out there who can help them.
.
I can understand only ever wanting to run with people who've done it a million times if you're in a rush or going on a fast badge run, but there are people out there who won't be able to be at your level until you give them a chance to run new places. I know I can tank a high level, but if you're never going to give me a chance to step into the instances I'm never going to be able to do so.

On our server, we tend to have a LACK of dps in LFG.
I don't ask for achievements and would never bc its not giving ppl a shot. I do however look at each persons gear and talent spec.. if they look like they understand their class mechanics then they will be thrown an invite.
But I remember the gear requirements prior to wrath in trade channel and LFG... "be ALL
pve
epics" before doing Kara or heroics...on my lock I was in shock and said "how can i get pve epics if i can't do the raids or heroics?"
Asking for achievements is kinda low I think...imo
