They are probably trying to fish up the
Giant Sewer Rat
. Counts for a fishing achievement and the pet collecting achievements.

Yeah, they're there for the rat (which I finally got after about 7 hours) or they really like being turned into a basilisk or $%^&roach from eating the magic eaters. Fishing in the fountain up top is fun too, and the 4 coin acheivements are quite easy to get.

Sewer Carp
are great for non- cookers, that don't need mana.
Magic Eaters
are a good buff fish but can give you a undesired effect when you might not need one...
And, yes the other reasons would be the
rat
and
coin
.
I have both :)
in which gave me
Shop Smart, Shop Pet...Smart
and then gave me
Stinker
.
