It's better for US realms than EU realms, often a realm won't have enough people submitting data to make the figures accurate.
Usually the biggest factor in choosing a realm (and faction) is having RL friends that play there.

There's currently no truly reliable source, and there won't be unless Blizz adds something to the Armory.
I heard Blizzard doesn't want to release a source for realms numbers, because people will move to realms where there are less of a certain group and the players in realms will constantly be changing. Forget the other info, but this is just a point to why Blizz won't release one... for now?
