Did you know that they can be controlled now ? You can make a macro like:
/petattack
/cast wrath

and they'll attack the target your are focusing.

Regarding PvE activities, they are worth the point.

Patchwerk 10 man version. 1 shaman (heroism, unleashed rage), 1 bm hunter (Ferocious inspiration), 1 feral druid (LotP, faery fire). 1 treant cast (well timed right before the heroism) resulted in 48k5 damage and a 250 dps increase over the fight for me.

Of course those are very good conditions, but even in less good conditions and having them die somewhat early, you'd have to time them really bad for them not be worth the GCD.

There's some problems.

OoC is very important to get.
Moonglow is an awful awful talent. It's less mana conservation than you'd think.
IMotW is probably going to be more useful to you than Subtlety.
Force of Nature is a great ability. I wouldn't pass it.

Appart from Sapphiron, i don't really see any boss fights where you can't keep your treants up enough to make them more than worth the GCD (Grobulus depending on how the tank moves, maybe Sartharion with drakes up, don't know what raid damage you get there).
