Quest in Elwynn forest: kills blackrock spies. It looks like I am killing them, it says "DEAD" by his character name, but my tally only says 1/8 blackrocks slained. One time when I killed one, it said SLAINED above its head, but I can't seem to see what I did different from other times.

That's really weird. That's one of the first few quests there. Are you sure you are the one killing them, and there aren't other people running around killing them at the same time or something? It needs to have a red bar above it's head and for you to get it down to 0 health for it to be a kill. If it's a grey bar, it means that someone else has started fighting it first, and you will not get credit for the kill.
Cheers.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was the one killing them. It happened like 20+ times, and only one of the, was considered a slain.
It did show a red line and the word DEAD, but... I am wondering if there's a technical difference between slain and kill?
Any links where I can get some light shed on this?

No, there is no difference in terms, but I suspect you are killing the wrong enemies for that quest. You need to kill
Blackrock
Spies
, make sure you are not killing
Blackrock
Invaders
. The links will show you a map where each are located, compare that to your position in the game (press M to bring up the map)

Darn! i figured it out last night. The ones I kept on killing and the ones that counted for the quest were 99% the same, with one exception: these had binoculars/monoculars. That was the only freakin' difference!
I wasted a lot of time killing a %^&* ton of wrong Blackrock spies.

Glad you figured it out.
Aren't the ones for the quests highlighted though, versus those not for the quests? I can't remember exactly how though. Also, are you using the in game quest tracker? It should have shown you the area that contained the right ones.
Also, I would highly recommend the Carbonite Quest addon. It is absolutely fabulous, and I have a hard time doing without it now. carboniteaddon.com
Cheers.
