Leveling as Bear
Return to board index
I've noticed a big difference in the ease of leveling of my first two characters in Panda-land. My Blood specced DK in crappy PvP blues and a 359 crafted 2h sword had a much easier time than my Elemental Shaman who was in 378 epics. It was so much easier that I was thinking of leveling my Druid as a Bear instead of Balance when a sweet 419 ilvl BoA blue Staff dropped that was perfect for a melee Druid. It may have been a sign. Conversely it may have been Murphy having another joke at my expense The problem is that I do not remember much about how to play a Bear beyond Swipe a lot for packs and to watch your Rage.
Some basic tips on rotation, talents, and glyphing would be appreciated. Thanks.

As far as an attack you might want to use, is bear hug. Mine can crit up to 180k over the 3 seconds. has a 1 minute cool down and is based on your health but that a huge amount for a single move.
Dayum that's better! I am still fairly clunky in picking the right button to mash but this is definitely a good way to level. I bought a set of ilevel 372 greens from a vendor in Hafhill and ran through 5 quests around the Strongarm Airfield. It went well. But its somewhat slower killing and if I'm right, any mob that self heals is going to be a pain.
Mobs with self heals aren't too much of a problem. You have several interrupts: faerie fire (if glyphed), skull bash, bear hug (heavy hitter and stuns them for 3 secs) and bash which also interrupts/stuns.
In terms of killing slowly, I found this to also not be the case as we do hit like trucks. However, if you do feel like you are killing slowly then pull more mobs at once and AoE down. Abilities such as thrash and swipe work wonders. Beserk so you can mangle 3 mobs at once and if you are specced into it, incarnation to reduce all cd's of attacks to 1.5 secs.
If you are going to pull a lot, use your rage often into 2 main abilities. Frenzied Regen for some health back and Savage defence for extra dodge chance. Other abilities like barkskin are very useful for more mitigation should you need it.
1 last ability I feel I should mention, Renewal. You have to spec into it but it is worth it. 30% of max hp as a heal in all forms with a 2 min CD.
Hope some of this helps
Here's your general bear rotation:
1) Pull with Faerie Fire
2) Spam Lacerate and Thrash
3) Hit Mangle when it's up (and when it procs, FF, Lacerate and Thrash all have a chance to reset the CD)
4) Swipe for groups when it fits in the rotation.
For easy fights, throw in Maul when you have the rage, for harder fights spam Savage Defense when it's available. When you need extra rage generation, hit Beserk and spam Mangle.
Your "Oh #$*@" buttons are Renewal (Tier 2 Talent, get it, it's a 30% heal, 2 minute CD), Barkskin, and Survival Instincts. As for the rest of the Talents...meh. I didn't honestly use them much leveling up, maybe someone else who did can chime in.
As far as gear, the role-specific rewards means you'll generally be getting what you should be wearing. I've noticed sometimes I get a choice between caster leather and tank leather though, for some reason, but the choice should be obvious. Crit actually matters more nowadays, as we only generate rage for outgoing damage (and abilities like Mangle and Enrage), and more crits means more rage which means more bear-staying-aliveness.

There's Might of Ursoc as well.
Berserk and Incarnation (if you chose it that is) are also technically "oh $%^&" buttons because it increases the uptime on Savage Defense and allows for more Frenzied Regen heals. And of course it also makes the mob(s) die faster which is always a plus.
As a sidenote, I'm leveling my dk now and so far while questing it's WAY easier to handle stuff like aoe pulls on him (in both frost and unholy spec) than it is on my druid in feral spec. Not sure why I'm mentionning this in a thread about guardian leveling, but I just wanted to put it out there :)
