Levelling a pet at 70
Return to board index
Well just wondering but if I was to tame a pet which was lvl 69 and I was 70 would I still be able to increase its xp and stuff ? Also what level would you guys reccomend to start trying out a new pet so the other pet also has good loyalty/xp? I am currently lvl 47 and I have leveled only a boar but I want to try out using a new pet for dps for when I get to do raids and things. I was thinking of using ravager since it is the highest dps pet but thats at around level 60. Could I tame one at say level 61 and still get it to have good loyalty and xp? Mainly to get more talent points then anything.
You'll still be able to level pets at 70, but currently it takes an AWFUL long time to do so. Even if the pet is in its 60s it can take days of grinding to bring it up to 70, and if it's less than 60 it'll be tedious in the extreme since the pet won't be able to tank at all for you. Should it actually draw aggro somehow it would likely get killed.
Easiest way to level pets to 70 right now is to do outland dungeons over and over. Set the pet to follow you on passive mode. That way it won't get aggro in a fight.
If you tame a new pet of your own level in outland it will eventually reach full loyalty. If you tame a pet at level 61 it will certainly be max loyalty well before 70! Due to the way the system works it can take a while, but it's not terribly bad really. The REALLY bad is only when the pet is much lower level than you are.
So when I reach like above 60 or so, would you recommend to actually get a new pet which is just lower so it can do dmg and hold aggro ?
Kai I wouldn't worry about it til you hit 70, keep your boar for now and get it to max level then go out and get a new pet then. Find a pet you want around lvl 69 and tame it, it doesn't take long to level and with the upcoming pet lvl changes in the next patch it will be better.
So when I reach like above 60 or so, would you recommend to actually get a new pet
No. Or yes. It depends on what YOU want. :P
If you want a new pet - go tame a new pet. It'll be somewhat less efficient initially due to lack of training points, but that will pass relatively quickly.
If you want to keep your boar that is fine too, except that there aren't any tameable boars past 60, so you won't get new versions of boar charge. That's a minor drawback with boars as the game is now.

Leveling up only one pet is extremely inefficient. Pets need significantly less XP to ding compared to players. Look at it this way. You hit level 43. You pet is level 42. Since you leveled, he can level. Well, he hits 43, and you're 39% through 43. That's more than enough left over to level a 2nd pet.
Before hitting Outlands I leveled up two pets together. A boar for tanking, and a raptor for DPS. This worked out well since pets need less XP to ding than players so one pet would ding, I would switch to the other and get it to level. Then when I leveled I would repeat the process.
Upon hitting Outlands I went and got a Ravager. I don't know for certain if I will be able to level all 3 effectively together. Pets still need about 1/5 the XP to level as a player, but with quests it seems like the characters level as fast or sometimes faster than the pets, from a percentage point of view.
Worst case, hit 70, get a max level pet or two. It's not uncommon for people to stop questing at 70 and almost exclusively instance. In this event I would respec away from BM to MM/Survival so you will still bring some heat to instance runs. During the runs just put pet on follow/passive and they'll level up at a good rate. Then you'll end up with 3 level 70 pets in a relatively easy manner.
