I think there's a couple of reasons BGs are quiet at the moment.

First a lot of people are still levelling their 70s to 80.

Second, since achievements were introduced (and especially the rewards like the +310% proto-drakes) people are taking the seasonal events way more seriously.

Once Winter Veil is over in a couple of days things should improve in BGs and keep improving as more people cap at 80.

Yeah, as Duroth said, the savage saronite set is a great starter set for pvp

Don't bother with AV as now its pretty much useless for practical reasons of gaining honor

Just go to wintergrasp whenever it's up and rotate battlegrounds to do the mark turn in, this should rack up a good amount of honor and you can start replacing the savage saronite stuff with the epic honor gladiator gear from the vendor in Orgrimmar (SW for Alliance).

Outside of honor, find a friend(s), IRL or from the game, that you work well with and start up an arena team, though you may only be able to have high enough rating for the savage gladiator set but it is still relatively good, as its as good as heroic blues. And i say friend because of my experience in "pug" arena teams, they usually suck and are not as much fun (sorry to those with "pug teams")

And as people have said above, do the wintergrasp raid (Vault of Archavon) for a shot at free epic pvp gear. Also do dungeons when your faction has wintergrasp so you can buy Wintergrasp Commendations to feed your honor pool.

DON'T however waste your emblems of heroism on savage gladiator gear, it's not worth it, you might as well get the epic PVE gear from the vendors, unless you already have all the emblem gear you need, so if you do feel free.

IMO marks of valorism are ok to spend, depending on your activity as a raider, if you raid a lot more time raiding than you pvp, then save the marks for PVE gear, but if you just get a couple valor marks from doing a heroic VOA here and there, go ahead and spend it on the hateful gladiator gear, unless you have an arena team that can already get hateful gladiator.

So basically, get extra honor whenever you can, VOA is free pvp epics, and save emblems for raid gear, except if you don't need the raid gear.
