All of the talents are meant to deal damage to a bunch of mobs while at the same time healing anyone in a group with you.
I love halo, because from a dungeon/raid standpoint, it does the most
stuff
. It doesn't have a maximum amount of targets, and heals/damages the most out of the three. The mana cost is really negligible because mana is so easy to get back. In a dungeons or raids, it's pretty much a guaranteed proc on all your trinkets.
Cascade looked appealing, but it does less damage/healing than halo, and it does have a maximum amount of targets. I'm really not too versed in it so someone can chime in on that.
Divine Star seems pretty useless to me as it requires that everything be in a straight line from you which isn't the case most of the time. Halo and Cascade can do work on anything around, regardless of it's position from you.
You can always play around with them to see what you like best, but the vast majority of Shadow Priests seem to be sticking with Halo.
It also looks really cool.

I assume, that hard cap of 20 individual targets applied to any AoE spell. Though, to be absolutely certain, it needs check.
P.S. Halo is my choice. Sad it's not spamable.

I went with cascade at first but noticed a big downfall. If you target a friendly player it only heals nearby players. If you target an enemy it only damages nearby enemies. Never both (as far as I can tell). Halo does both and does it instantly to all enemies and allies in the area. Also a big benefit in pvp is if you know a stealth is in the area Halo will hit all targets (even stealthed) within a 30 yard radius. This is REALLY handy in catching them of guard.

I've been playing around with Divine Star since the hot fix to it. The thing pumps out so really nice healing and damage now. Plus with such a short cool down, i might switch to it permanently as it does the same thing as halo just in a set direction.
Try it, you may like it.

Yes, Halo ist theoretically nice for exposing stealthers, but has little to no use once they are out - the cd is too long, it can break cc, and dmg and healing are so difficult to control that it's probably a waste of gcd for both shadows and heals. Furthermore, most stealth classes can easily outrun it. Mind Sear is spammable and still a better choice for that purpose.
Divine Star, on the other hand, is at the very least an instant self-heal (very handy for shadows) on a short cd that does a decent amount of controllable dmg. If you're saving a teammate with a Leap of Faith, the Star would be the instant heal to get him, or both of you back up.
And people keep seeing a lot of Halo because it has this in-your-face awesomme effect - Star is barely visible. You may feel awesome with Halo, but Priest is normally the 1st target in a rated battleground, and the awesome 80 yards circle that says >>PRIEST IS HERE<< must not be the best choice.
Cascade is wasted in arena due to the fact that it cannot heal/do dmg to a target more than once. It may be somewhat interresting for bg/rbg, but has the same >>HEAL PRIEST THIS WAY<< problem. Granted, Priests have many in-your-face pointing spells, but I prefer not to add more grief.
