When editing a thread that violates the rules, such has posting in caps the entire post shouldn't be hidden when locked as it might provide information that other user's could be looking for or interested in. Just edit the post fixing the offending problem and add a comment to the post stating why/what was changed.

Moderators only wipe out or delete threads if they blatantly violate the rules. "Minor infractions" on useful threads would never have the same treatment.
