Most raiding mages use Molten. You really just have to know the boss fight and if you have a large enough mana pool to use Molten the entire time. If you have a shadow priest in your group then clearly Molten.

As a raiding mage, I must agree with Alpha. Molten armor is for giving us an extra kick on the damage meters when we're kicking around trash and whatnot, and I'll often use molten on many boss fights, but that directly depends on the length of the fight. If I don't have a spriest in my party, and I know the boss fight is a mana-intensive one, I will throw on mage armor. In the span of a 3-5 minute tank-n-spank that constant mana regen will always deliver you more bang for your buck than molten armor.
Molten armor: Makes your mana pool more valuable by giving you the added percentage of more damage on a more frequent basis (+3%). Chance.
Mage armor: Makes your mana pool last longer and on a consistant basis. In a long-duration engagement, any persistant bonus is more useful than a not consistant bonus. The mana you will regen in x amount of time will provide y more fireballs/frostbolts, which is more important than getting bonus damage on a percentage.

Not clashing with anything you say but just adding onto this point: If you are a mage with 10/48/3 (Popular pre-BT build) your molten armor will help more than you believe. With Master of Elements, the more you crit the more you get mana back. So basically here is a quick break down. Spell Cost 100 mana, 30% chance to crit, 3/10 spells crit, in 100 (hypothetical) spell casts you get 900 mana back, granting 900/10000 mana or 9% mana back.
Cost 100 mana, 33% chance to crit, 100 spell casts, 33 crit, 990 mana back, granting 990/10000 mana back or 9.9% mana back.
Basically makes your spells (Overall) more mana efficient if you have this talent.
PS I'm sorry if I got my numbers wrong... I'm not really a theorycrafter but I believe the general theory is correct.

And on a side note: Please show <3 to your spriest. :P My bf is one and says he's tired of everyone treating him like he's their whore.
Lol, we have a Spriest in our guild, and we love him. Can't do more than 4 big heals out of shadowform though lol, but he's earned the very loved title "Mana Battery" because noone and I mean NOONE goes OOM in his groups. (1200 shadow dmg)
