MoP at Patch 5.1: Spell Power & Protection Paladins
Return to board index
I have been reading through various forum sites and sifting through the guides. There seems to be a lot of varying opinions on the topic of Protection Tanks and Spell Power. I wanted to see if anyone has experimented with a SP weapon (or other gear) at Patch 5.1 and what those results were.
From what I have read, the following abilities or spells (and perhaps more) are affected by SP:
Censure from Seal of Truth
Hammer of Wrath
Shield of Righteousness
Word of Glory
The Protection specialization ability
Guarded by the Light
“Your spell power is now equal to 50% of your attack power, and
you no longer benefit from other sources of spell power
This would lead one to believe that using a SP Weapon would have no benefit. Has anyone sampled this? Can anyone confirm the mechanic?
So I decided to run some tests and found that using a SP weapon or other SP gear does not improve Paladin spells.
“Your spell power is now equal to 50% of your attack power, and you no longer benefit from other sources of spell power.”
It is also confirmed that Protection Paladins need to consider some DPS plate as tanking plate (and/or do some reforging) as the new stat priority is:
Stamina > Melee Hit (7.5%) > Expertise (15%) > Haste > Mastery > Parry > Dodge
(As is detailed at several sites on the web.)
I definitely wouldn't place stamina above getting hit and expertise capped. Maybe place it equal to haste for 25 man heroic tanking, equal to mastery for everybody else.

You linked the spell that told you using a SP weapon would be useless for a prot paladin....did you think Blizz put that there just to mess with you?
And for your stat prioritization, stam stacking hasn't been good since LK. There are 2 current builds for paladin tanks...survivability build and control build. Noxxic.com has both listed.
