While some of these morals are cliche, we must remember that this may be the target audience's first exposure to them. But yeah loved the episode. So many concessions to the fans... Luna comes back, Lyra talks, Vinyl Scratch shows up again (and even takes off her glasses), more Sonic Rainboom, more party cannon, epic new villain, and as a big brother in the military, I couldn't be happier with Shining Armor. God-tier episode all around.

I'm starting to wonder (not in a bad way) about the show's target audience now. Season 1 was E/I branded so it stuck to pretty kid-friendly plots, but season 2 dropped that and got downright dark at times (Discord mind rape; Ep. 3, HERE'S JOHNNY Twilight will haunt my dreams for all eternity). No more evident than end of Part 1 -- dawww, Twilight and Cadence make u--
HOLY BALLS, FEL PORTAL TO PONY HELL, WTF AM I WATCHING
But yeah loved the episode. So many concessions to the fans...
Lots of great pop culture refs for the parents watching. Fight scene is pretty much a take on Matrix Reloaded (right down to the music cues, Daniel Ingram is clearly channeling Don Davis at the end), with a Powerpuff Girl ref or two tossed in for good measure. I lol'd heartily.
God-tier episode all around.
They pretty much pulled off a 40-minute Disney movie there, and did it in rather epic fashion.
If you
really
want your noodle baked,

Confirmed by the show's composer.
Although I would've preferred something other than the whole love conquers all ubercharged force-field deus ex machina at the end
That's pretty much been the show's modus operandi for its boss kill episodes. Don't see a need to change it, really. It works for what it is.

Overall, I did love the episode. But Luna's absence bugged me so much because she showed up in part 1 and right at the very end. I was thinking "You would have been useful about 10 minutes ago". But I loved the fact that it was basically a musical. Oh, and I kept thinking "Twilight could probably do a better job on the forcefield."

Well, I assumed Rainbow Soar and Fancily Rare were shipteases. Maybe Spikey Belle too.

Ooooooooooh, that's what you meant :P, those ones (excluding spikey belle) would be believable at least. Well, spikey belle (ugg...these name mergers.....) would make more sense than rarity/spike, since, you know, spike's a baby dragon (despite his maturity and intelligence level) where as rarity is an adult pony, and sweetie belle is arguable the same age as spike.
There's still the
mayfly-december issue
in any case with ponies who aren't alicorns (and that opens up questions about Cadence and Shining Armor, seeing as Celestia and Luna are, well, millenia old).

Well, Celestia and Luna might not be the only alicorns other than Cadence, or might not have been at some point. It's also possible that Cadence is a weird relative like.. I dunno, second cousin or some ^&*!, so saying neice is easier. And Princesses Luna and Celestia are co-rulers of Equestria, but as a member of the royal family, Cadence might be called a princess too. Of course, that would make more sense if Luna and Celestia were Queens, but as it stands... I couldn't tell you what the ranking system would be. It's much easier just not to think about it.

Cadence wasn't originally supposed to be an alicorn, iirc, in the same vein as Prince Blueblood. Might have been executive meddling that made her one (actually, I think the whole concept started as executive meddling, but I won't get into that now). As far as canon goes, I figure there are pony gods , e.g. Celestia & Luna (in the order of, say, Helios and Selene), and whoever their immediate family is, and then, perhaps, if one of them were to have kids with a normal pony, the child would be a demigod e.g. Cadance (in the order of Heracles or Perseus). Perhaps Blueblood's blue blood is even more diluted, (one demigod parent and one normal parent, perhaps?).
That allows for Cadance to both be an Alicorn and also consort with normal ponies, as demigods did.
Also, Twilight's parents must be pretty well-frickin'-connected. Twilight went to Celestia's school, Shining Armor becomes Captain of the Royal Guard, Twilight was foalsat by a PRINCESS, for buck's sake!
Edit: Another note to make is that Celestia's defeat is justifiable, imo. I would wager that Queen Chrysalis and the changlings are not merely another races of mortals. They seem more demonic or vampiric (escaped from Tartarus, perhaps?), and I could easily believe that Chrysalis is a primordial spirit like Discord. Add in that she's been gorging herself on Shining Armor's love, and it's quite easy to accept her defeating Celestia. Celestia is very powerful, but not all-powerful. Her domain is the Sun, and those powers might not extend to other aspects of life.

I know, but come on. It's the
one time
that she actually tries to get her hooves dirty on-screen. And she gets &*!@ing curb-stomped right after a moment of awesome Mama Bear-ness. :/ It seems like Celestia in double bills only serves the purpose of getting Worfed.

I wouldn't say she got curb-stomped right away. If you paty attention to the
ancient egyptian
laser beams you'll see that she was actually winning their little power duel, but Queen Chrysalis (is that a fan name or did I miss it in the show?) turns her power up to eleven at a moments notice afterwards and then and only then beats Celestia. Element (heh heh) of surprise and all that.
Could also be that Celestia is just not as experienced in fighting as she once was. You have to think about it; it's been at least a couple thousand years since she had to battle creatures like Discord, and even back then she was using the Elements of Harmony, not her own alicorn powers. It is quite easy to state, though, that the Changeling Queen uses her abilities on a regular basis.

Youtube, they're all over the place. Every episode from Season 1 too.

I had a thought: what if Alicorns are not genetic in origin, like the pony traits then embody, but magical in nature? I'm pulling a note from a fan-made parody here, but:
Magic law dictates the number of Alicorns that can exist at one time. If I want any powers of my own I have to convince Luna to give me hers.
It could be that, just like how FiW explains it, Alicorns are created not by genetics but by magic that is transfered upon the death/reliquishing of their powers. This could explain why Prince Blueblood, although he is related to Celestia nad Luna, is just a normal unicorn; no Alicorn gave him the abilities/he did not inherit the Alicorn power from a fallen one.
However, this still does not explain why Luna and Celestia are immortal and unaging while Candace apparently does age; although I think that is because of their roles as physical goddesses and their ties to the Sun and Moon.
