I think hasbro just wanted another alicorn toy to sell, sadly.
Oh, I'm not debating that; I'm just putting out a possible answer to a question that seems to be bothering those who are interested in such elements of the show's world.

I imagine that it was Hasbro's idea first: play off the royal wedding and do a wedding event from which they could make lots of new toys. They couldn't marry off any of the Mane cast, obviously, so make some new characters and marry them.
It would have been the show's team that took that executive meddling and used it to create Twilight a brother and even make him likable right off the bat (I swear, I was looking for reasons not to like Shining Armor, but thwn that song... Man, that song totally disarmed me... :|).
They managed to take a marketing oriented event and turn it into a mini Disney movie. And I would be surprised if there were a few continuity nods in Season 3, either (I love the way this show maintains continuity).

Continuity! boom
As I said; can't wait for Season three. Although I can't help but wonder; will Studio B create a villain to open it up with or has Queen Chrysalis taken control of that for the time being? And will they instead just open Season Three with a normal episode? Will there even be a season three? That last one is based mostly off of I can't remember seeing anything about it.
And I completely agree on the mini-Disney movie part, and they did it
perfectly

My only complaint is that the epic story they created for the finale was difficult to contain in 40 minutes, so it felt a bit rushed in places, but it was still one of my absolute favorite episodes.

@ morec, I think chrysalis is dead, she sure would've fell a long distance along with the rest of her changelings, disney type death basically. I'm surprised they ended season 2 with another 2 parter along with a new villain, since it breaks what was thought to be a tradition of starting each season off with a two parter and villain to defeat. So that being said, I'm positive season 3 will start off with a normal episode.
While the Disney death idea makes sense and is plausible, this is also a world where ponies can ram at full speed into various object and, for the most part, be perfectly fine. Case in point: Hurricane Fluttershy - Rainbow Dash hits a tree and her eyeballs go straight through it. Not to mention at least the changelings were able to ram themselves into the force-shield and bombard the ground with their own bodies and then get back up perfectly fine.

Not sure if belongs in LoL thread or here...

I would imagine changlings would have a muh different anatomy than normal ponies. They'd probably be much harder to kill.

True, but rarity (and the wonderbolts who tried to save her she knocked out in her terrified flailing) would've died (which they note by thanking rainbow dash for saving their lives) if they hit the ground in Sonic Rainboom, so there is a fall distance in equestria that's fatal, just that you can fall somewhat longer than in real life without serious injury. But chrysalis's fall distance would've been fatal unless she landed in a tree.
Tho I would be ok with her making a comeback (since she's my favorite mlp villain), even tho I prefer the villain of the week trope over the recurring villain trope.
Technically, they also would have died (along with Rainbow Dash) when they made contact with like, anything. They were pretty much at terminal velocity, and RD and the others never slowed anywhere near enough before they were saved. So yeah, that argument doesn't carry much weight.

And sometimes fictions deviates from physics for the sake of drama, not just comedy, See
Not The Fall That Kills You
and
Required Secondary Powers
.
Hundreds of fictions do the same thing, so I don't see it as being worth complaining about.
