Likely the same reason Luna did once she was freed of being Nightmare Moon, then looked older when she appeared on Nightmare Night. Probably has to do more with intellectual maturity than physical, or something like that.

I'd imagine she's the heir to the Crystal Empire, not necessarily it's eternal ruler. I'm sure it will all be explained in the actual episode. We already have confirmation Cadance and Shining Armor will be in it (/Rainbow Dash squee).
Edit: Also,
LOL!

They should ponify Bruce Campbell. I would love to see that.

Must.... Wait... For full show...You can do it! D:
I'm distracting myself. I got to Captain on Halo: Reach, finished the Pandaren start area, and am now working on getting to 90 before 5.1. Should keep me plenty busy 'til the 10th.

I feel somewhat split on the voices and singing of the gender flipped ponies fans have made, but oddly I find I particularly enjoy -- and that they often work very well -- when being sung in
duets
.

Such a great episode.
Discord is still best villain, but Sombra is by far the darkest. Wow.
Excellent blend of humour and epic mythology in this episode.
Big news for Twilight, too. I think this "next level of her studies" is significant. I'm not saying she's going to become an alicorn princess, but something big is in store for her, I think. Also, it's very interesting seeing her cast some darker magic.
It was neat to see Spike play a bigger role, for once.

I really enjoyed it. What Sombra lacked in motive, he made up for in sheer intimidation factor. Nightmare Moon banished Celestia and set up eternal night, Discord Discorded the main six and and threw Ponyville into chaos, and Chrysalis sapped love from Shining Armor and sent Twlight to the Canterlot caves, but how often were any of them really scary? Wherea Sombra was a menace that we were made aware of the entire episode, and it actually seemed alarming when he broke through. I liked that he hardly even talked. Rather than a vocal character, he seemed more like some dark force of nature.
Think of it this way: What motive or personality did Sauron in The Lord of the Rings have? But can anyone deny he was a great villain?

Kind of a bad comparison. The LotR books make his motive readily apparent.
Contrast with this episode. We're
told
there's a threat, but I never really
felt
the threat. The whole thing could have been paced better. The first half was almost completely wasted in that regard, and then the whole deal rushed to a conclusion in the final 10 minutes.
Not to say I'm necessarily disappointed. Overall I thought it was good. I just found myself expecting more at the same time.

Meh, I was satisfied. I felt the threat when Sombra broke through and started tearing the place up. I really liked the way the sky turned orange when he came in.
Also, I really appreciated the lesson about delegation and self-sacrifice (even if Twilight kinda completely missed the point at first... :P).

Sorry but not sorry - the S3 opening was probably the weakest double bill to date.

Remember this
is
geared at kids, you can't expect the villain to always have some deep motive behind their actions. Sometimes they just do it
because...

I did like the villain, though I think it may have been nice to get a little more fleshing out for him - but eh, what do you want from a kid's show? I WAS a little disssapointed with the premire, though, and part of that WAS due to the villain, but I do have to give them props for not having made Candence and Shining Armor perminnantly crystal. I haven't seen any of the preview for next episode (and I'll probably avoid them like I always do) but I am expecting great things for this season.
All in all review: 6/10.
Villain was kinda meh, but has provided a lot of potential for fan work.
Storyline was about the same as any premiere (a new evil emerges and Mane 6 has to stop it)
I LOVED the animation for the Shadow magic. It really stood out compared to the rest of the animation with with bubbling-style effects.

I liked the villain, myself. He seemed a lot more
Card Carrying Villain
, than the others. Nightmare Moon was somewhat sympathetic and not scary at all, Discord was more Chaotic Neutral
(Type 2)
, and Chrysalis only did what she did to feed her subjects.
Sombra is the first one that is both truly
evil
, and genuinely menacing (imo, at least). Sure he didn't have a lot of character ization or motive, but I don't think it was necessary. Look at Sauron, or Kil'Jaeden, or the host of other big bads used to populate fantasy fiction. A great number of them are just evil, cause... evil. They're just motivated by generic greed, hatred, and thirst for power.
I liked having a villain that wasn't as sympathetic, for once. I liked him being actually menacing and, well, scary. And I liked that he actually got offed at the end.
The jokes were funny (Pinkie Pie Splinter Cell, "I just made a hat out of three pieces of hay and a drinking straw," Rarity flipping out over the crystal ponies, etc.), it had its epic moments (Celestia with the crystal, Twilight and Black Magic, anti-gravity spells, Shining Armor in snow gear, Sombra's first defeat, etc.), it sowed important seeds for future events (Cadance's being referred to as the Crystal Princess and her cutie mark glowing when she used the heart, Twilight's destiny, the mysterious dark book Luna conjured up), and I liked that it included Spike in the heroics too, rather than just keeping him out entirely (Season 1 pilot and Season 2 finale) or relegating him to a minor plot point (Season 2 pilot and Season 1 finale).
It had strong humour, a really strong fantasy backbone, strong animation, and good songs. It wasn't my favorite two-parter, but it had it's own charms. It was certainly better than the Season 1 pilot (I still can barely watch that one).
And the rest of Season 3 (Trixie, Discord, Scootaloo, Wonderbolts, Twilight's Destiny) is looking better than ever.
I mean, if you didn't like it, I can't make you enjoy it, but I
did
enjoy it, and wasn't disappointed at all.
TL;DR: GAK GAK GAK GAK GAK GAK
