Welcome to WoW! I hope you know how to limit yourself at highly addictive gaming, because this game will test that limit.
I'd recommend before starting a class you get to know basic gear limitations for each, as well as the weapon proficiencies that each class has.
Also, wowhead has tons of class specific forums with stickies at the top of each page. If you're wondering about the best leveling spec or what stats you want on gear
CHECK THOSE
.
Finally, if you want to read up on some World of Warcraft Lore, head over to wowwiki.com, they're full of interesting articles on the background of Warcraft and you can get addicted just wasting time learning about important figures in Warcraft like the Lich King or Varian.

I'm just envious, I remember my first time on wow back in 2004, having just made a gnome rogue and couldn't believe how HUGE Coldridge Valley was.. Hours later I went through the tunnel and saw Dun Morogh and my jaw dropped from the sheer size of it. I found the map button and couldn't believe the size of the world (Dun Morogh) compared to the huge Coldridge Valley I'd spent hours exploring..
Imagine my brain doing a backflip a couple of days later when I discovered that Dun Morogh was only a tiny part of a HUMONGOUS island, not to mention the time I managed to zoom out enough to discover that there were another continent too..
Everything was big and shiny and exciting and mindboggling, so much to do, so much to explore, man it was great...
My best advice to you, Empyran, is to cherish it. Go at your own pace, don't rush through things or get a friend to boost you. Take your time, read the quests, challenge your brain trying to figure stuff out. Don't resort to addons like Mobmap and Questhelper to solve all the riddles for you just yet.
As for race and class, just read through the descriptions and pick one you like. At some point you'll probably end up with a bunch of chars around level 15 and start to figure out which play style suits you..
