Do you often Dismiss your pet or get out of range of it and its getting despawned?
Does it die?
Is it ferocity pet? Make sure you got at least 1 point in Bloothirsty.
I have no troubles at all.

FYI, dismissing your pet doesn't result in a happiness decrease anymore. Are you using lower level food?
