It happens to me, too.
Most of my friends prefer Horde because they prefer to play the Big Bad Guys and prefer PvP over PvE.
The typical argument they have is: Normal realms are for crybabies, cowards and emo-girls, and the alliance is for little kids, anime fans, etc.
My counter-argument is that the Horde and PvP are for bullies, and bullies suck!
Don't let the opinions of others affect your choice. Choose what YOU like (remember, it's your money).
Hope I helped.
P.D: Don't care about stereotypes. They're just that.

It doesn't have to be either-or, you can have 50 characters on a WoW account, 10 per realm.
On PvE realms you can have both Alliance and Horde characters.

When I started playing I went pvp because the friends who conviced me to try were on that type of realm. While I like battlegrounds and think I will like arenas (not 80 yet) I don't like world pvp. So it wasn't long before I rerolled on a pve server, still say hi to those friends now and again.
With regards to Alliance/Horde. Play both :-D seriously there is no need to stick with one or the other, there's some nice lore to both sides along with cool locations. And neither is really "good" or "evil" although it does seem to be percieved that way.
All sterotypes are exactly that, and not worth listening to. I mean if anyone is that daft there's the ignore button.

I'd say, play what you want to play on a server you want to play on. After all, it's your game and you pay for it. There's nothing wrong with picking an Alliance toon or a PvE server, and you have your reasons for doing so anyway. Why play on a PvP server when you dislike PvP, or play Horde when you rather play Alliance?
Yes, of course there's some grief between Horde and Alliance, it's the way the game was made. Both sides, however, have the same prejudices against each other, as far as I can see (and I play both sides). Like WildXenria said though, there's no real 'good' or 'bad' side, that all depends on the side you play on. And yes, for lore and seeing new places, try both.

Some people like to play the "good guys" and therefore choose the Horde...jus' sayin it's not all cut and dried in our world of warcraft.

There are just as many immature, whiny, idiots, crybabies, anime fans, emo girls, bullies, jerks, morons, little kids, etc. on Alliance as there are on Horde. Period. Level up do your thing, and just like real life you will meet like minded people and join a guild where most of those people won't matter anymore.

A lot of guys want to be seen as being "hardcore" so they play Horde on a PvP server. People laugh at me sometimes when I tell them I'm Alliance on an RP server, but I don't care. They're just trying to be "macho" by making fun of the "carebears". I like it better here.
I played horde once, and I played on a PvP server once. A friend of mine actually quit the game because he hated being on a PvP server and didn't want to take the time to re-level his character (back before they allowed paid server transfers).
Try both sides, just to get a taste of how it feels. But don't listen to those people when they say "you're not really playing unless you're on a PvP server." Just play what you think is fun.

Choose whatever you like more. Stereotypes are a form of backstabbing, like slandering indirectly or graffiti. It means people are either too weak to confront you, trying to do away with competition however they can, or both.

orcs are not bad, only misdriven by foul gods. Something like katholic christians in real worlds history.
That has to make quote of the day. We should probably invent quote of the day just for that quote.
