All right well,
3 years ago met a girl on my server doing a dungeon. Thought she was cool and helpful so we started playing together and i joined her guild.
I took a break and when i came back almost a year later she was still there and we became friends again. We've been playing together ever since. At this point shes my best friend even though shes on the other side of the country. We talk through text, email, and on WoW.
There are some things in the past year or so that would have been extremely hard getting through without having her support. She has become a life long friend that I've never met in person, but hopefully soon I will :)

Even though there's no real life auction house like in WoW (not very many at least), I'd say you can definitely learn a few things about economic tendencies and apply them to the real world, by building up your economy in-game. For example there is a certain resemblance to stock trading, in that you buy something for less and re-sell for more.
Certain vanity mounts/pets/etc.
- you need to work for nice things.
Also this. Even though its just a game the sense of achievement is pretty great after you finally get that mount you've been farming for ages. Makes you aware that hard work pays off in the end.

If someone offers to help you grind for something
You are going insane. Bang your head against the wall a few times to make sure you're awake.
Really? I sometimes offer help.
