Welcome the wonderful world of WoW, BTW.
It sounds like maybe you don't know what class to make. I would suggest Rogue. I just started a Goblin Rogue recently and I'm loving it. If you are Alliance, I would suggest starting a Worgen, because their starting area is supposed to be great.

The general advice I've seen to people who don't know what class to play is to level to 20 or 30 on the classes you're interested in, and then decide from there. I agree with lankybrit's suggestion of going worgen for your race if the class you want can be a worgen and if you are willing to shell out the money for all of the expansions all at once.
Rogues can be difficult to play if you're out soloing, but only if you get in too deep (too many mobs or too hard-hitting mobs). For those cases, there are abilities designed to help you, such as vanish, sap, blind, gouge, etc.
Hunter can be leveled by the "send pet in, autoshot, loot, repeat" method, but it's far from optimal. They have their shot abilities for a reason. If your pet dies, those mobs you were fighting will come and try to kill you, which forces you to run from them until they reset or you reach somewhere to feign death (after level 32).
Just try playing a few characters to those levels. If you don't feel like it's the class for you, try something else.

Get your friend to faction transfer to Horde, then roll a mining/engineering goblin hunter. Do that and you'll win. Everything.

I definitly aggree with Kopking. Try a hybrid class. You will be able to fullfill any of the roles mentioned below:
Druid - Caster DPS, Melee DPS, Healing, Tanking
Paladin - Melee DPS, Tanking, Healing
Shaman - Melee DPS, Caster DPS, Healing
Warrior - Melee DPS, Tanking
Death Knight - Melee DPS, Tanking
If you get bored of one playstyle you may switch without leveling another character. I always get kind of bored whenn playing DPS only classes (Mage, Rogue, Hunter, Warlock), but that is nothing more than personal taste. Hope that helps, enjoy the game!
