Why do some people think achievment points are for spending? What would be the point of them if you could spend them? The whole, and only, point of achievement points is to compare yourself against others.
You already get tabards, titles and mounts for doing certain achievments, that's plenty.

...if achievements were just the novelty of having them (beyond a few tabards, titles & pets), why have achievement points all?
You have a list & total number of achievements
AND
acheivement points.
Only reason you would have achivement points would be if they would be usable for something at some point. Other wise you would just have a total of ahievements done.
Some players are task oriented and this gives them a "measure" of success by virtue of a point of comparison with other players. Some tasks are more difficult to achieve and deserve more points. In a way, it is a rating system for tasks accomplished...if that's your thing.
However, I think I did read a blue post on WoW forums which indicated they were considering the possibility of some sort of return on the number of points.
I am okay with them as is, simply because I like to compare my character's accomplishments with others, and other player's will recognize mine, "Wow, you did that?"

@OP- It's probobly just going to be for buying new vanity pets, vanity items, or special mounts. Using it as currency for actual gear upgrades would just give addicts another reason to keep playing, and Blizzard's arleady had a whole fiasco about that in the past.

I think people shouldn't be able to spend Achievement Points... It's just not Blizzard's thinking lol :P I think they implemented it because it'll make people feel good about themselves when they reach 745, and when they compare theirs to somebody else's.

Maybe they'll put in a vendor that sells you more stuff as you get more achievements/points.
