PoM-Pyro-Shatter

Am I crazy in thinking a build built from a 21/11/20 framework would be PvP viable? One could concievably fire a PoM-Pyro/Fire Blast Shatter combo (fast enough that many dispellers would miss dispelling Nova), with Shatter's bonus crit chance giving you a decent shot at powering through resilience. Picking up a handful of other fun tricks along the way to the three key talents, you get Imp. Missiles, Imp. Mana Shield, Impact, Ignite, Imp. Frostbolt, Frostbite, Icy Veins...
But yeah. Tell me I'm insane?

Firstly, 3 minute mages are the lamest excuses for mages.
Secondly, shatter only applies to frost spells, so PoM/Pyro will break nova not leaving enough time to include a frost spell, as well as only increasing crit chance. With PoM Pyro you should have enough crit chance to make it crit, and since shatter only increases crit chance (not damage) it would be pointless. However, alot of frost mages enjoy using PoM Frostbolt for a frostnova/frostbite proc for an easy burst of damage.
You would most probably use fireball as your main nuke, thus eradicating the slowing/frostbite/winter's chill aspect of the frost tree, reduced only to a lucky CoC - A
big
waste.
Also, dispellers can remove PoM and resiliance is a killer to this build.

Wow, I never knew that shatter increases all crit chance (You learn something new every day ^^).
And in response to your PoM/Pyro remark nickelleon, I realise I was being harsh, but I stick my opininion. It sounds good at first, but the appeal is quickly lost due to gimped DPS - yes, a good burst, but other specs/classes can match this whilst maintaining damage.
However, the shatter thing actually makes elemental appeal more to me (Hoping to go elem end-game).The major down-side I can see, is the mentioned lack of later tier talents and the chance of ignite breaking nova/frostbite, as well as a lack-lustre play that isnt all it is cracked up to be, with less survivability after the initial pyro (But some frost talents do make up for this).
Also, in your spec you seem to be reaching into too many trees which will result in lots of low tier talents which aren't all that good (especially arcane). You should stick to elemental - a mix of frost and fire - for a more diverse play as well as some consistency. Pick up blazing speed, ice shards, shatter, frostbite and impact/ignite and have some fun! :]
To the above posters: Due to fireballs larger damage and ignite/impact procs, the use of frostbolt could be redundant except from rank 1 to refresh the winter's chill/slow effect.
Cheers, vValentine.

If you're gonna call someone a lame excuse, at least be able to read a tooltip. Sigh. btw.. ALL=ALL.

Intelligent response.
To sum up, big burst, no long time survivability.

don't give him a hard time for not knowing shatter applies to all mage spells... they recently changed it and before it was only frost spells... ive been playing on my mage recently and i didn't even notice this... and im sure many people still dont realize it
Recent as in June 2006?? 16 months ago?? Patch 1.11. The biggest mage review since launch?? Sorry but when Blizzard changes my class and refunds my talent points, I take 5 minutes to review new spell descriptions, guess I'm hardcore...Or maybe I'm just not someone who picks a cookie cutter and never looks at any other spec. I'd recommend trying all 3 trees at some point to all mages. You can learn a lot about different talents and spells that way.

I played a mage before and a NEW mage after the patch, and in between I took a break - So, why dont you stop being so condecending?
I simply said, in my opinion that 3 minute mages (Not mages with PoM, as it is a great asset) have no long term survivability.

(Brb, I'm going to check up on any other of the hundreds of tooltips to make myself cool)

You call someone a lame excuse and then call me 'condescending' - ha.
Why would you play a new mage? Waste of time imo, just respec or transfer imo, unless of course it's a different faction.
Hundreds of tooltips? How about trying to cover the ones for your class, won't make you cool but will be a small step to being compentent. How about when there's a major change to a class, take a look at the changes - woah, I know, lots of work or did you just assume you knew *everything* there was to know about a class. If I took a break, the *first* thing I'd do is check the PATCH NOTES. This game changes btw.
Define a 3 minute mage. Someone who has PoM, AP and Pyro? I had all 3, nice bonus for an arcane/fire mage. I did very respectable damage with all the other talents I picked up on the way. It was a PVE spec for the time but Slow is very useful in PVP.
I think I'd do *okay* in a 2v2 with a 41/20 spec if I had arena gear tbh, I'd just need a teammate that was FF'd before me. I'd complement the build with other pvp talents like Impact. But PoM-AP-Pyro shouldn't be used as an opener I found. Use it to finish off an opponent or two. Timing is
huge
in Arena.
