Taken out for Trainers as of 4.0; it was a way to force people out of the cities and back into old but new Azeroth.

There are two portals that can take you to Azeroth, but they do not lead to cities.
In Shattrath, there is a portal to the Isle of Quel'danas, which does have a flight point to the mainland.
Dalaran has a portal to the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. The closest city is Thunder Bluff, and it's quite a trek, but flight time is probably about equal to flying to Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord to wait for the zeppelin.
