I know that running someone through an instance around their level over and over is an efficient way to help boost up your friend up the levels to catch up to you. But I was thinking, would it be possibe to say head up to northrend with him and kill a whole bunch of higher level mobs with him? It would be hard to do it outside a group because he would have to tag it first. When the new patch comes out it would be easier to tag mobs and then I could just let him tag and then I just kill it. Is this a good idea or should we just stick to instance grinding?

I believe the farther away level-wise the mobs are from your friend, the less exp he gets.
I've been boosted through some instances myself, and noticed that when I was 5+ levels lower than the mobs, I got less exp than my friend who was somewhat closer to the mobs in level.
This also goes for him tagging the mobs first. Tried it with a friend, he got very little exp from it.
These are just thing's I've noticed tho, so might not be 100% correct.
