Is there ever going to be a premium service initiated for the site? The ads really bog down my computer when I play WoW. I'd like to disable them for a small monthly fee if possible.

Hey there,
I cannot give any answer on whether there will ever be a premium service added to Wowhead, however Ads should not be affecting your computer's performances in any way.
If this is a problem with specific ads, please report those following the instructions in
this thread
.
If this is a problem with all ads / all flash ads, try updating your version of
Flash Player
and your internet browser.
If it still does it after that, I could try to help you if you were able to give me more information on which browser/OS you use, aswell as information about your system and RAM.

Well, this is the only site that does it to my computer. I suspect Firefox does some "bogging" as well, but the ads are cumbersome.

How much RAM do you have? You should be able to check out by right clicking on
My computer
and going to
Properties
.
Also, do you run WoW in Windowed Mode?

2 gigs of RAM
Yes, I play in windowed mode.

Have you tried turning down your multisampling? Top right option in Video Options ingame.

Flash is kind of a memory hungry beast, so unfortunately a certain amount of slowdown is unavoidable. Adys' tips will definitely help you squeeze some more performance out of your system, though--and if it is a single ad that seems to be causing an inordinate amount of slowdown, I encourage you to report it to feedback@wowhead.com.
As far as a premium service goes, this is of course an idea that's been tossed around a lot. I'm curious to hear what your opinions are on a premium service, and what it would involve?

There would have to be some very significant benefits for me to consider paying for online content. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would so much as tempt me towards a pay service, but I would like to hear about possibilities.
I'm likely on the side of the spectrum that would shy away from that stuff, though. There will of course be those who don't place as much weight on the concept of paying for content on the internet.

In my experience, I find that "premium services" usually contain information that is available for free elsewhere, and I tend to look down on providers that operate as such. Ad-based revenue is a wonderful thing, look what it did for Google!
Perhaps premium services could be a reward for contributing to the site? This could lead to more people contributing (but also to abuse of the moderation system).

It is mostly the adds that have heavy animation. I will try my best to pinpoint the ads that are causing a system issue. My computer is non sub-standard by any means, but it does have some age in relation to all the new stuff coming out.
Similiar to how fileplanet.com and warcraftmovies.com operates, they charge a small monthly fee and give you the option to disable ads or not. If you do not disable them, they remain up... however some may just pay in order to keep the site running. wowhead.com has jumped high in popularity so quickly that it must be rough on the financial side.
I could be wrong, but I'm willing to offer the support of donations or premium service payment. A small contribution usually goes a long way.

Let me be 100% clear--we're not talking about restricting the content that's on the site. I'm just wondering if there are bonus features you guys would consider paying for.

Check your Proccess Memory for IExplorer in Task manager.. If it is a large amount then my guess the flash ad isn't properly created, WoWhead might want to look into complaining to their provider if this is the case...

I suppose there could be like download-like content. Movies, mods, etc...
I really like the database here. The site is fast. It would be perfect if there was some content that was easily downloaded. Heck, maybe even a 3rd party program for wowhead instead of coming to the site with no ads on it.
Sites like ui.worldofwar.net and deviantart.com made a program you could download to your computer and would have direct access to the site with much more ease.

Yeah. I use firefox and the "firefox.exe" is like using 50 to 60 percent of my processing power. I had to close down the entire browser, otherwise I would get like 2 FPS in-game.

Just an update: I've done some computer "clean-up" so to speak and the game seems to be running a little bit better. Although, some ads popup that are lagging the game sometimes. I'll make sure to document those that come up again.
Again, regarding the premium services, I would still willing to be pay some sort of fee to access "member only" content, but it doesn't seem like any of the staff want to make some of the site disabled to free users.
This site does offer a lot and I think the addition of mods would be awesome. Maybe even some video uploads/hosting!

From my own experience, that'd sounds much more like a spyware than hardware problems, particularly with 2 gb of ram. It's also likely the origin of the popups -- but make sure to report them anyway, "just in case".

What could you possible do that you haven't already done? People would maybe consider paying for guild pages, based on the fact that the wowhead name is extremely popular, and wouldn't be as horrible looking as guild portal. Save that, I honestly can't see anyway or anything feature wise you could possibly add, you've done a great job here and what has been announced as upcoming features is fantastic.
Is there a way to donate, I would much rather everything be free. IMO, can't be charging for what someone might end up doing better or similar for free. I've seen competitors go down because of this.

I'd pay a small, monthly payment going towards further development of the site if I could have the option on closing off ads. And not having to enter that dang number for every post / comment I make. Payment would be sort of a validation too, wouldn't it? Hence the code input shouldn't be necessary.

Ditto. I block the ads already (sorry) but I wouldn't mind paying to have them turned off on your side. Removing the CAPTCHA for premium members is a good idea too, I think.
