Eh, I support the site enough to keep the ads unblocked just so wowhead.com doesn't get jipped for payment. It would just be nice to have that option to pay like every 6 months to remove the ads as part of that support.
Regardless, I'm still all for a premium service. The staff would probably be surprised how many would support you.

As the site grows, we have more things to take care of. Skosiris has been spending most of his time on forum features, and Mystadio has been working crazy hours trying to get the character profiler finished. In addition, both of them have just started school again. We're only human. :)

Is there ever going to be a premium service initiated for the site? The ads really bog down my computer when I play WoW. I'd like to disable them for a small monthly fee if possible.

A adblock plug for Firefox makes the ads hide, and if you don't really click on them you aren't helping wowhead either. For them to get paid from ads you got to click and probably purchase the product, then wowhead will receive some money for it. - Otherwise if the ads are just lying around and you don't really click on them either you could hide them for your own pleasure. Not because you don't wanna help or support wowhead but because you just wanna get rid of problems like flash eating ram or flash making the game lag (you name it). :)

Wowhead is built on voluntary contributions by its users; content they have offered to the site for free. It would be immoral to later start charging for that. Besides, the reason the internet is the success it is is that most sites DON'T charge directly for their content. People simply don't have enough spending money to buy subscriptions for every website they like to visit.

were
to add "premium content" that it would be database-related, user-submitted content. We already give people that for free, why would we suddenly start charging? Sorry, but I have to agree with Mirvon up there, you're simply making assumptions and I'm going to firmly sit here and state that they're incorrect. In the event of premium service implementation (and no, that isn't some veiled statement that it will happen) we do not plan on "moving" any existing content to being premium-only. Wowhead's userbase (especially those using the
Wowhead Looter
) is one of the main reasons we are where we are today. I'm sorry that any sort of "corporate" attitude makes you believe that we would suddenly turn on the users that we love and appreciate so much and rob them of site features. I like to think that the Wowhead staff maintains a great relationship with the userbase and that you'd have more faith in us than that. :(
Just because we pretend to be professionals every now and then doesn't mean that all we want is your money.

I was inspired by another community's list: Smashboards.com premium. It consists of:
No ads
access to a forum all to theirselves
A little icon in the avatar box that says they pay premium
Personally, I would probably go with for Wowhead:
No ads
CAPTCHA removal
Change of "Wowhead User" to "Running on Wowhead Premium" or something like that. =)
I dislike the idea of PMs for only those who pay premium, as they would be useful for all (reporting bad people, or just general chitchat), but then, they still aren't around (if they're coming), so it's a non-issue.

I would like to take this oppertunity to point out that my only issue with the ads are them being very bright, which clashes badly with the generally dark color scheme of the website :)
