Unfortunately no, you can't turn this off, and yes it's annoying. About the only thing you can do is put him/her on Ignore so you won't be grouped again through LFR or LFD.

Are you sure you weren't standing in something and he was trying to save you? As someone who plays a priest, that is the only time I use it in LFR/LFD

I was going to say. I don't think they could have used lifegrip to make you fall off a ledge, because it only pulls you to where they are standing. Also, there is a lot of bad on the ground during MV- I can think of a number of things that people have to be pulled out of if they're not fast enough.

Although, both of you having said that, I've personally dealt with the annoyance of my raids lead heal lifegripping for fun mid fight, lifegripping when he was bored, and lifegripping people who ticked him off.

As someone who has played all the classes at end content I can tell you that it is much more difficult to see the surroundings when in melee range of the boss. Feng in MsV has a couple mechanics where standing in bad can wipe a group, Fire/Arcane damage. In LFR (now nerfed significantly) it was very easy to wipe a raid in just a few seconds of tunnel vision. That being said the priest has done one of 2 things.
1) Pulled you out of bad.
or
2) Tried out his new toy to annoy.
For lack of a better description, this can be a
Blessing
or a
Curse
. ;)
There is no immediate way to combat this effect. But options would be check yourself before talking to said priest, and if you were doing your role politely ask the priest not to continue it. Take it into your own hands if it gets used on every cool down.
Ignore
or
Vote kick
.
As frustrating as this may be to the receiving end, It can be pure comedy on the casters end. Being a Goblin Priest now I have found it upon myself to grip a healer on Hagara (DS) on the last second before the Ice Wall would come in contact with me /Grip /Disperse. :) Only on guildies near the end of boss fight for giggles. and on the more recent Elegon (MsV) encounter. Floor would be about to despawn, at 2 seconds left /Grip /Rocket Jump. :) again pure comedy and used on guildies for giggles.
GL out there on dealing with this new mechanic.

Whenever we ran back from a raid wipe our priest used to 'grip me if I was ahead of her. I remember it pulled me back to the priest and turned me around so I was running the wrong way. So while you can't directly kill someone with it (unless you intentionally stand in the fire and yank someone into it), in that way, yeah you can
technically
'grip someone and cause them to fall off a ledge. I assume that's what the OP meant. It's particularly annoying for melee, as they usually have to move around a fair bit, even just little adjustments, to avoid this and that.
And in answer to the OP: yeah, it's super annoying and makes me want to kill the damn priest. I've experienced the same thing, though it was mostly back in Cata when all the priests were doing it because it was new and shiny. I've also had priests 'grip me into fire before, which is just as irritating.

This is not anything new. I used to do this for fun back during DS LFR.
Funnily I never suffered repercussions for it though...
Also it makes me wonder if Blizzard should consider adding a way to shut that off or, alternatively, make it work in a matter similar to Thresh's lantern in LoL.

If people turned it off, and died... they would blame the priest for not saving them. Just accept that occasionally you'll meet a troll priest.

I also believe it should have the option of being disabled. It shouldn't be necessary for a player to require a priest to "save them" from themselves, we went years without something like that and I think we could continue. I think the spell is fun but rarely does it help except maybe when a player is AFK or D/C'd. If someone does need it due to some mechanic, then they'd simply have to "enable" it before the encounter.

The uses i've seen of Leap of Faith:
- Intentionally pulling back a tank that is moving towards a pull. On each and every cooldown.
- Excidentally pulling a player back onto the Elegon platform that's about to collapse.
- Kill or attempt to kill a friendly player at elevator-boss in BWD. Happened to me several times.
And pretty much anything that's mentioned here:

I have, however,
never
seen any priest (or druid, since symbiosis) actually use it for what LoF was intended for. To yank people out of sticky (or fiery) situations.

I've only recently leveled my priest to 90 (she was lvl 89 for three months because I couldn't stand playing a caster after having made so many melee toons). When I was finally able to que for LFR I made it a point to always save stragglers on Elegon. When I get to the ledge, I look back and search for anyone that wont make it and snatch them off before they drop. I do this because a priest once saved me the embarrassment of running back on my warrior. If I have the ability, I don't see why I shouldn't be of use to everyone.
However... I must confess that I do misuse it when I am running heroics or old raids with friends. I have too much fun in BWL in the mist/slowing room when my warlock friend does his little demonic leap to get ahead of us. And when an antsy DPS tries to rush the tank (who in my runs is usually my husband or a close irl friend), I yank them back behind so the tank can pull at their own pace.
Last night when a friend of mine kept LoFing me, I only smiled, because it just so happened that I was on my hunter. I misdirected several bosses to him to return the favor. We all had a blast.
This being said, I also find the spell kind of annoying. Not only when its misused either. I know they mean well, but I find it more disorienting to be pulled from no where than just just running in a random direction away from the stuff on the ground. Just because I lag for a few seconds doesn't mean I'm not going to move out of it.

I used to do it on the fourth boss of DS, If you were running too slow and about to be hit by the ice wall I would grip them away from it, or if the got ice tomb and weren't stacked i would grip them to where they needed to be.
Edit: Though my brother used to do it all the time like he was racing me to get so a certain point.

If a priest if going to life grip me for fun, then they'll have no problems me using them as a focus target for MD.
I too have a get out of jail card for free card to play for S&G's.

A Troll Priest is fine, even if they are smelly Horde. ( <3 )
A Jerk Priest is not.

If we started taking out/turning off spells/items in the game due to the annoyance factor... This wouldn't even make top 10. How many Choo Choo Train sets have you seen ? How many times have you seen a mage arcane exploding near the AH for 30 mins straight? (such a high pitched sound) How many times have you clicked a mage portal in DS instead of the portal to Hagara? The list goes on... yet The priest spell at least serves as a utility and often needed mechanic due to scrub nubs from trade channel joining your almost full guild run.
The spell isn't as annoying as the person casting it.

I use life grip a good bit, it has many valid uses.
Pulling a tank away from a boss about to die can speed up the heroic a little, especially with body and soul.
Melee dps standing in bad on the ground, or in front of a cleave etc.
Its very useful on rattlegore to help a slow tank drop the stacks, and in fact its useful when kiting in general.
On feng heroic, use it when our warlock isn't around to take the stun (since the warlock can port back to us, it isn't needed). Pulling the player back into the melee is faster than them running and zero dps lost if you do it during the stun
By far my favourite example was on spine heroic, our warrior tank was stunned by the add in the middle of the boss as we were rolling, yoinked that noob into the tentacles just as he was flying over the back of the boss. That felt
awesome.
Having said that, on the other hand...
Pulling people through damage walls is fun, hagara elegon etc.
Pulling people to the edge of something as they're running and jumping between pulls is pretty awesome.
Pulling the kiter arround on garalon lfr is fun, especially if you can time it with a cleave to maul a few ranged.
Leap of faith interupts casts
. Children's week, I lost count of the number of people I gripped to stop them capping the tower in AV.
If you're hearthstoning at the end of the raid, and so is someone else in the group, spam that lifegrip button. The grip will go off after you hearthstone, interrupting their cast.
Its worth saying there are a few places where, if you have levitate on as the priest, you can stand ever so slightly over the edge and make someone fall down without them moving. Way too much effort though tbh!
I'm sure I missed a bunch. It's a very useful spell, even if only situationally. I would greatly mourn a toggle to disable it :(

Your comparisons don't really relate to the frustration felt from a character being able to physically MOVE you somewhere. The train and someone Arcane Exploding everywhere is a simple "get away from it" or "temporarily mute the game." A way to evade those annoyances already exists. The mage portals are again easy to counter just by hovering over them before you click to ensure you're going where you desire.

There are many things in the game that are able to physically move you somewhere. This just happens to be the only one where you can communicate with the person doing it. I don't see how this is any more frustrating that numerous boss mechanics, knock back abilities or the DKs Deathgrip.
I think you have a better chance of getting the abilities removed from the game, than getting an ability to 'deactive' Life grip (and effectively it would be the same thing, because priests would stop using the ability due to all the 'immune' targets). Just saying.
