So, while I can flag carry pretty well and I can hold a node until some DPS-ers get there pretty well, I'd like to be able to deal more damage/pull my weight when it comes to melee.
Then go Ret. Sorry :)
Understand you're never going to be anything but an annoyance to the enemy since the vengeance fix for PvP. It's the sad truth I think.

Sadly MrSCH speaks truth.
I PVP'd as prot for a while and it's fun but it's far from optimum and as I started getting more into arena I moved away from it.
That said, in the chaos of a random BG optimum doesn't count for so much, and there are a few things you can do to tune yourself up.
This guide is a little out of date now (it pre-dates the vengeance changes for example) but most of it's still relevant:

Basically stack crit, sod mastery, glyph Avenger's shield and line up your trinket, wings and inquisition (keeping an eye out for sacred duty procs) for occasional burst.
