Just a stupid question: How much defence a Protection paladin should have? i'm not a paladin but I'm a prot Warrior who is helping a friend paladino to switch from ret to prot. I don't know if spell power is more important than defence rating for him. Does he need 540 def too? Do you suggest a shiled for spell power/intellect or for defence?

Here's my preference as to stat priority:
Defense (540 for raiding, 535 for Heroics) -> Stamina -> Block -> Dodge/Parry -> Strength -> Hit/Expertise -> Everything else
If your friend will be tanking he doesn't need, nor should he try for, gear with Int on it. Tankadins now get their spellpower requirements from Stamina conversion via talents, and they regenerate mana by getting healed by others, through Blessing of Sanctuary (avoidance and block), and Divine Plea in a regular rotation.
Oh, and make sure your friend is not taking gear with Attack power on it, even for DPS sets. Strength is a much better stat, as Paladins get (I think) 2.8 AP per Strength, and scale it with buffs, while Attack power is a flat 1 to 1 and doesn't scale at all.
