Well since you are a warrior your attack power is going to be one of the main stats they look at you for. Just to know how much damage you will be doing.

I have to disagree with Valeth.
When players ask about your dps they do not usually mean the numbers listed on your character pane. The character pane shows your weapon's dps but that should be far below the actual damage you deal because it does not include any of the damage using special attacks adds. Instead players are talking about how much damage per second you do on average(usually recorded using an addon such as Recount) during previous instance runs or against a target dummy if you don't have an instance run to compare to.
Measuring your actual dps serves two purposes. It helps define what difficulty of instance you are ready for the same way knowing your attack power, crit chance, and hit chance does. It also helps show how well you can play your character. You might have great gear with lots of attack power and crit rating but if you don't know how to play effectively then your dps will still be low or you might have very high dps for the gear you are wearing showing that you really understand how to pull every last point of damage out of the gear you have.
Not knowing your dps in a group setting isn't a bad thing for inexperienced players. I'd happily group with someone who can show me that they are using appropriate gear for their character and admits they they don't know how well they will do in a group because they don't have any experience. I would however be very unhappy to find that someone inaccurately claimed to deal a large amount of dps and instead I have to slow down and hold their hand through the entire instance because they are unfamiliar with the encounters and other player's expectations.
