Question About Being Booted From An Instance

I'm just curious if I did something wrong or what. We were running a Cataclysm dungeon, Blackrock I think, and I died, so the leader says "pay attention, we could've wiped", I didnt think it was directed towards me but I ended up dying again, got revived, died again, and following that, we wiped, then I get booted and I see a message, (again, not sure if it was directed to me),"You never pay attention", but I guess it was because I got booted.
Im still fairly new to the game, but i'm just curious, how is it my fault if I die? Isn't that supposed to be on the Healer?
Or are Paladins expected to heal themselves?
Lvl. 81 Paladin, DPS
I was following them, it wasn't like I was straying off by myself
Just asking so if I did do something wrong, I don't do it again

well as a dps you ain expected too heal yourself most of the time.
you are however expected too move out of bad things when they happen so you don't take insane amount of damages.
considering how it was mentioned you should pay attention i can only image you were standing in bad stuff several times and even after they mentioned you shouldnt do that you did it agian.
now i have no idea how far you got, but from my own experience there are quite some aoe effects dropped on the ground or done by bosses that are easily avoidable. and very damaging if you stand in them.
plus the bosses and trash hit fairly hard, so the healer probally didnt have much time too heal you while he/she was keeping the tank up. and i once agian only can assume you made the healers job harder by not avoiding avoidable damage.
Ofcourse as a new player i understand you might not know what too expect, there for ask others about what a boss/trash does. most of the time there is atleast 1 helpfull player thats willing too share their experience. which can warn you about deadly things.
as a rule of thumb: when there is something on the ground and it deals damage move out asap.
when a boss does an aoe atack be behind it or move out till it ended. (good example of such an ability is the first blackrock caverns boss the ogre and his whirlwind aoe)

Curious as to how you're a new player at level 81.
In dungeons, there are myriad ways to die. I'd recommend looking at the Dungeon Journal entry for the instances in your level range; it's very helpful to have an idea of what you're about to jump into.
Healers are there to take care of a group, but It isn't a healer's job to keep you alive DESPITE everything else. if you aren't trying to keep yourself alive. And from what you describe, it seems like you didn't have much awareness of your surrounding or fights. If I'm a healer and someone keeps standing in bad, I'd be reluctant to worry about healing them.
Like felhunter said, your best bet is to let your group at the start of a new instance that you aren't familiar with the place. I'd much rather type out a brief summary before each boss than to watch 20% of the group flail around wildly and possibly waste more time.

Make sure your graphics settings are set to where u can see the animation effects on the ground, I remember one time in Karazhan , someone kept telling me to get off the fire lol , I didnt see any until a few days later I discovered the setting on the graphics menu was disabled or set to low , then I was able to see Nightbanes "charred earth" ability.

this shouldnt be an issue anymore, since blizzard made sure all effects that are important can be seen clearly even in the lowest setting.

The graphics setting you are looking for is Projected Textures. Make sure that is on.
If you are so inclined, get the AddOn GTFO, which gives an audible warning when you are standing in bad things. It can be found on Curse, possible WoWInterface.

If you are standing in it its probably already too late so addon achieves nothing. You shouldnt be stnading where it lands in the first place.

The only boss that I can think of in Blackrock that you, as a player, could personally jeopardize the rest of the group (being as they mentioned you could have wiped) is Corla. Not getting out of the beam on time and/or not blocking one altogether depending on your group composition.
The rest of them you can certainly jeopardize yourself but not the rest of the group.
As mentioned before Dungeon Journals are great while you're in-game, outside of game you should peruse sites like this one and look up the individual fights. There are a ton of useful guides on here to help you get a better understanding of mechanics.
