First things first, my art teacher told me you don't have to be an artist to
be
an artist. You just have to love and enjoy art, be whatever it might be.
Anyone can doodle. Doodling is art.
What kind of tablet did you buy? What I tend to like to do is draw on paper then upload it to my computer, then clean up with my tablet.

That's pretty much what I have too!
I would say do whatever you feel like is the easier for you to do. Since you are really leaning more towards digital art, then the tablet will probably be your best bet to start with.

Pro for tablet: It has a save-butt *cough* UNDO button.
