i just read that the ranged weapon slot is going away. will warriors still be able to shoot/throw? i use it to pull a melee mob sometimes.

You have to throw your weapon with Throw and then bash the mob with your fists until you pick up your weapon again by looting it.
Jokes aside, it throws "something" at a mob which initiates the fight and pulls the mob to you. I don't know exactly how much it hits for, but you can definately use it whenever you want to.
